Matt Spiegel of Chicago’s 670 The Score is reporting that the Chicago Bears plan to meet with veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie today at Halas Hall.
The cornerback depth of the Bears took a hit this week when Kyle Fuller had to have arthroscopic knee surgery, with head coach John Fox calling him “week to week.” Bryce Callahan (CB/NB) missed last night’s game with a muscle strain to his hamstring and corner Jacoby Glenn left the game with a concussion.
Cromartie has played 10 years in the NFL, most recently with the New York Jets last season, when he started 15 games while defending 12 passes. The 32 year old has only missed 2 games in the last eight seasons, so durability hasn’t been a problem. The 6’2” Cromartie is an experienced press man corner with 133 total starts in 158 games.
Yeah, with the Fuller situation it would be a good idea to at least bring him in and se who gets released in the next few weeks. They need depth at that position badly.
well, fact is they should bring in any DB's that have a quality... maybe we can find someone like Potter last year, he was pretty solid for us majority of the time
As long as he's not Rolle from last year they'll be fine, and hopefully he still has 1yr of magic left in him. Even if he's merely average it'd be a win.
Rolle was a miss, but I guess I (sort of) understood that move. Our DB's were unexperienced, hes contract was only a 1 year hit.
No I get the idea also, but if you are so bad you cannot play, being experienced doesn't help a ton. But you saw what happened last year w/the ILB's when they had no vet experience. It just has to be decent experience.
At some point in time Fangio and Donatell, along with Fox, have to decide when it's time to let go of the thought that 30 year old plus vets in decline can help much more than guys in their early 20s competing for a roster spot and starving to get to the NFL.
Even without Fuller and Callahan we have four young DBs looking for work; Hall, Glenn. Bausby, and Calhoun. If none of these guys is ready to step into a starting role and do any better than Fuller did as a rookie (and that wasn't all that great) then maybe we need to look at a vet but at least for now I think we should see what we've got. They can't get any experience sitting on the bench.
IMHO it's good to kick the tires of a guy like Cromartie in the event we desperately need him but for now I don't think that's the case. We are never gonna build a championship team unless we start developing our own top shelf players. All of the rest is just putting a bandaid on an open wound.
I think the Bears just don't want a complete fail in the backfield the Bears had at ILB last year. Need some competent players back there. As long as Porter is healthy I think they'll be fine to let some of the young players play it through.
I don't get the reasoning behind bringing Cromartie in, honestly. No one is really expecting this team to make a deep playoff push this year, correct? Then what's the point of band-aid'ing the situation with a 32 year old player on the downswing of his career? I like some of the developmental young guys we have, specifically Glenn and Callahan, and would much rather see them get some PT.
This year should be more about evaluation and development than anything else imo
