How do you know if Pace can draft a QB or not? Releasing Cutler without a replacement would be like keeping him. We know what we Need and if we pick up a guy like Romo or Glennon after releasing him we still can draft a QB. We could do the Redskins route and pick a QB early and in round 5/6
For the rest of this year all I'm gonna do is analyze the play of guys looking for who might be worth keeping around whose not.
That is a GREAT way to spend the rest of the season. I think I will do that too. It's "the game within the game" that might make the final 7 games of this season bearable (no pun intended). That's a great point, Soul.
What else is left to do? I think Ryan Pace will be doing the same or at least I hope he will since that's what he gets paid to do while I have to do it for nothing.
IMHO we currently have some younger players who would make terrific backups but they aren't ready to be full time starters yet. That's very obvious in the secondary more so than anywhere. But we have others as well on both sides of the ball who are marginal starters at positions where we need to upgrade in order to get to the next level.
These are the players and the positions Pace needs to identify going into FA. That comes before the draft and what we can accomplish there will dictate who and what we draft. This is why I keep saying that seriously talking about or trying to mock or predict a draft now is pretty useless. There are far too many factors as of yet to be determined to know who might even by available. The post season All Star Games and the Combine will help.
Last year about now it was Jaylon Smith or Myles Jack who were being mocked to us. How'd that go? Both suffered season ending injuries, ended up as 2nd round picks, and we signed two UFAs to solve our problem at ILB instead. It's the same with QBs this year. They're inexperienced, raw, play mostly in spread offenses, and are questionable as far as being NFL ready year one. So how does that help in 2017?
That's a dilemma with no quick answer as I posted in another thread but continuing to upgrade other positions can only help in the overall. The way this team is playing right now God himself couldn't win a game unless he struck the other team dead. I'm gonna let the QB deal work itself out and it will. There are options out there to consider. In the meantime it's everything else that needs looking at because it's on the OL and the defensive side of the ball where championships are won. A great QB is only needed when you aren't strong everywhere else.

Don't you think those guys will require some significant guaranteed money to sign? Are either an improvement or just a change? Romo practically is Cutler and Glennon hasn't impressed anyone so far. Unless you think he's your QB of the future why do you want him? He's nothing more than a backup caliber QB with less experience than even Hoyer has. Don't you think any "place holder" should at least be a vet?
I'm not saying don't I'm only questioning whether it's no more than a change for the sake of change. Look at the economics of it. Cutler is younger than Romo, has a .500 W/L record playing on very shitty team over the past 4 years or so, has zero guaranteed money left on his deal, and a fairly cheap salary. What will it cost to replace him with Romo and with Romo's track record of injuries can you keep him on the field?
I agree that these are options but what other options are out there? I'd want more to consider than just these two. Knowing what you need and actually being able to accomplish it are two very different things and that was the point Moon Mullin was making in the column of his I posted. It's not as easy as it seems when you actually have to do it and on top of that we have long history of drafting very poorly when it comes to QBs. We could just end up with Cutler v2.0 or worse.
The reason I'm still single is I didn't want to marry a third woman who was the same person as the first two but in a different body.
F all this shyte ! Out with the old , in with the new ... and if that means waiting a few years , for better overall results , then that's something I'm ok with .
Doesn't Romos contract come with him via trade? That's 19 million a year for him for 3 years. Am I wrong? Plus a lose of a draft pick(s) too.
It does in a trade unless it's renegotiated and why would he do that unless it was that or be released. He's conceded the starting role to Precott so now Dallas' #2 make more than our starter who some feel is overpaid.
That's why trying to pick up a vet whose under contract via trade is tough to do and with a $12.5 mil base next year Cutler may look like a bargain to a team who needs a vet in order to cut ties with who they have.
The easiest solution is always to make your own guy better but for a myriad of reasons that never seems to work well for us. Poor players, poor coaching and schemes, poor support. You name it and we've done it.
