"Jay Cutler still needs to go, despite successful return for Chicago Bears"
Jay Cutler performed well in his return from a thumb injury. Despite calls to keep him as starting quarterback, the Chicago Bears need to make a change.
Last week, Jay Cutler returned as Chicago Bears‘ starting quarterback. If you listened to some of the reports, head coach John Fox was not enamored with having him return.
With the injury to Brian Hoyer, the question on who would be the starter was moot. Hoyer is out for the season, and with the horrible job Matt Barkley did in replacing him, Cutler is the man.
Asked about whether he had Fox’s trust, Cutler responded with “He doesn’t have a choice, I guess, at this point.”
The Bears may not have a choice during the season, but they will once the season ends. They paid Cutler’s guaranteed money, so releasing him would not be expensive. They will look to trade him, but they can release him if the trade option does not work.
In his return against the Minnesota Vikings, Cutler threw for 252 yards and a touchdown. He had a 100.5 passer rating. He also gave a rousing pre-game speech that got rallied the troops.
Because of this, many fans want the Bears to keep Cutler. They do not want him to be replaced. They claim bad coaching, bad offensive line, bad wide receivers and bad popcorn as reasons for his deficiencies.
The good play in his return is EXACTLY why the Bears must separate themselves from Cutler. Yes, he has all the ability in the world. He threads the needle with his rocket arm and he makes almost any pass. He also plays with emotion and get fired up.
The problem with Cutler is that he cannot maintain it. Once you see what he has, and you get sucked in, he reverts to his old ways. He throws off his back foot and overthrows or underthrows receivers. At times he looks like he just doesn’t care about the outcome of a game.
Nancy Armour of USA Today Sports said it perfectly in an article about Cutler.
"Few quarterbacks have been as polarizing in Cutler, both in Chicago and around the league. No one denies his physical talent, but his head and heart are a different story. He’s not coachable. He can be reckless. He loses focus, often at the most inopportune of times. He’s soft. He’s not a franchise quarterback."
The Bears are in a transition state. As a result, there are new, young players on the roster. They are shredding a lot of the older veterans.
