The problem as I see it is that there are not a lot of quality QB's coming out of college these days. Most do not run the pro system in college but are rather more read / option QB's. The question now is do the Bears draft a QB even if there is not a real quality one out there or do they change their system ? Lots of holes to still fill as well so my thinking is to draft quality players to fill the holes and wait until that real good QB that fits the system becomes available. That way there is no drop off and Cutler remains as the QB at a reasonable price with a better supporting cast. I'd hate to see a wasted pick just to draft a QB no matter how good or bad he is.
The team still has to give that QB a good supporting cast on offense and a great defense or he won't win because few of them have enough experience in a pro style offense to run much more than a pared down version of one for the first year or two. Once teams get enough film of those guys and their limitations all of a sudden they don't win so easily or as often.
After starting out like a seasoned vet in Philly with 3 wins Wentz has lost 4 of his last 5 games and Philly is now 4-4 but a month ago it was we need to draft 1 or 2 so we can get a guy like him. Of course monsters is still on that kick but that's one out of 50. So far the best rookie QB is Prescott and we passed on him in round 4 and the #1 overall pick hasn't even seen the field yet even though LA is starting the #32 ranked QB in the NFL over him.
So this idea that drafting a shiny new passer without building the rest is a myth. It just doesn't happen that way all that easily. The next Manning, Brady, or Rodgers is not as close as the #1 overall pick in the draft and even if you had him that still wouldn't be all you'd need.
