1. I don't think 2021 is a make or break season for Pace/Nagy. The wheels are going to have to come off Trestman-like for them to get canned. I think we are looking at 2 years plus for both of them.
2. I'm not saying they won't draft Mills but I haven't seen anything linking them to Mills.
3. I'm hoping for an OT and/or trade down.
1. I agree. No point giving Pace a 2nd bite at the QB-apple unless you have the patience to see it through. That means 2 years minimum, probably 3. Once the decision was made in January to stick with this regime, then you gotta STICK WITH it.
2. Bears weren't linked to Trubisky at all. It was all hush-hush back then. This time they have been at every QBs pro-day in a public way and DeFelippo worked out Mills personally. I think they've been linked to every QB prospect from Wilson down to Franks.
3. Me too. Those are the two most obvious choices at #20 unless there's a big run on OTs ahead of them.
So now we know Pace is going for Mills. He might even go in the first round. He might even trade up to make sure he gets him. This is just like Trubbisky. Pace gets fixated on a QB and then salivates over him to the point of trading up, when he could get Mills at 20 or even in the second round.
It is not that he thinks, or needs, Mills to get the Bears into the playoffs in 2021. The problem is that he cannot afford to come out of this draft without a QB that he can sell to McCaskey as the future franchise QB. That means he MUST come up with a QB in the first two rounds, because ALL the top 7-8 are GONE by the time the Bears draft in the third round. Farley, Newsome, and Bateman (and even your tackle or two) might still be on the board when the Bears pick Mills. Before reading this article (supposedly based on insider information), I thought this scenario was possible. Now I think it is probable. The only thing that saves us is some other crazy moving ahead of the Bears to take Mills.
Edit: I think Bears management has leaked the name Davis Mills and insinuated that they may take him in the first round so that we are psychologically conditioned. They figure that putting the idea out there might reduce the effect next Thursday, and so not as many Bears fans will go into an apoplectic fit when they hear, “With the 20 pick in the draft, the Bears select Davis Mills…”
This writer is even trying to get us pre-conditioned to the idea that it makes sense for Pace to trade up in the second round for Mills… ’\there’s a strong chance Mills would still be on the board in Round 2 when the Bears pick at 52nd overall. If there’s a sense that Mills might not make it that far, Pace can always trade up from there to get him. It wouldn’t cost nearly as much draft capital, nor would Mills bear the burden of expectations that inevitably accompany a first-round pick.' The problem with this theory is that some team (Steelers) could take Mills at 24. PLEASE!

I really hope its not Mills. That might be enough to get me off my couch looking for my club and torches....

I wouldn't put much stock in that story. Rumors and disinformation flies around everywhere this time of year.
----------
That is true. But I keep getting the SAME story all over the internet, and almost nobody predicting Bears take Mond, Trask, etc. on second day. At this point, I am confident that it will be Mills, and the question is which round.
I have started doing cognitive behavioral therapy on myself to try to see this in a positive light. This guy might turn out to be fabulous QB. He is big. He is accurate. The next Peyton Manning baby! Or even if he is a total bust over the next couple years, that sets us up for your 2023 as the year the tank job is complete, Pace/Nagy are finally gone and the Bears get to draft a possible franchise QB in the top-10.

Let's be honest--whatever QB the Bears draft this year, be it Lance or Mond or Mills or Trask (those are the 4 I think they might have a shot at), is likely to become no better than a backup. I'd like to find the next Brees or Brady in there but I'm realistic and ok with that. I'd much rather end up "drafting a backup" than cycling through Hoyers and Daltons and Foles's.
Bears need to draft TWO new QBs over the next two years from the first two days of the draft. They have neglected the position for far too long. [Pretty much same thing at OT -- TWO over next two drafts in the first two days of the draft.]

That's how I see it too. I just hope we get lucky and we get a guy who surprises us and actually develops into a good starting QB. But if it's a good backup QB, hey, I'm fine with that too. I just want the Bears to TRY and fix the position through the draft. I find it disgusting to not even try to draft a QB. Is it a long shot to actually get a good QB? Certainly. It's a long shot. But we know is if the Bears don't bother to even try to draft one, well, you have zero chance then. It's about like forfeiting a game because you don't figure you can beat a good team. To not even try to win is about on par with not even trying to draft a QB. Because it is "hard" to beat a good team you just "quit" and don't show up on gameday. Same with drafting a QB. If you just roll over and give up even trying - I just find that disgusting. Quitter attitude.
Pace tried to "buy" quarterbacks (Mike Glennon and Nick Foles) but that didn't help the team at all. This year Dalton is the guy. I like to think Pace can draft a Glennon/Foles/Dalton level QB if he kept pulling the draft trigger and TRY to get a guy. And in the process maybe we get lucky and draft a better QB. Sheer luck happens sometimes with teams. Why not us? We're due for some good luck I think.
Keep trying until you get your guy. Don't roll over and give up drafting QBs. Try. Then try again... and if you don't have the stomach to even try then you shouldn't be a GM of a professional sports team. Sports is all about trying to be great. Not rolling over and giving up.
