Jay Cutler still isn't healthy enough to practice By: Bryan Perez | 2 hours ago
The calls for Jay Cutler to return to the Bears’ starting lineup are louder than ever after Brian Hoyer’s uninspiring performance against the Jaguars in the team’s 17-16 loss in Week 6.
In Hoyer’s defense, he’s been efficient and mistake-free, but when the Bears needed to move down the field late in the game versus Jacksonville, the journeyman passer simply couldn’t answer the call.
Now facing a short week before their Week 7 showdown against the Packers, Chicago will have little time to determine if Cutler is ready to get back into the starting lineup.
Coach John Fox confirmed that Cutler still isn’t healthy enough to practice.
The Bears have gone 1-3 with Hoyer under center and have lost the last two games late in the fourth quarter because of his limited skill set. In Week 5 versus the Colts, Hoyer missed a wide open Alshon Jeffery for what could have been a game winning touchdown, and in Week 6’s loss to the Jaguars, he simply couldn’t gain yards in chunks for an offense that needed to get into position for a game-winning field goal try.
It’s possible that Cutler would have won those two games, and the Bears could be sitting at 3-3 with hope moving forward.
Instead, Chicago will have to wait another day to see if Cutler practices, or at the very least, takes one step closer to suiting up again for the Bears. Jay Cutler still isn't healthy enough to practice
This is actually the best news I've read so far today.
Good! Let Fox squirm and continue to sit in the hot seat over his failure to give Cutler any vote of confidence at all while he was out. Let Fox contemplate the true damage he caused starting a QB controversy that didn't need to happen because somehow he could see Hoyer as the "hot" or "winning" hand when no one else could.
How does this differ from Fox seeing Lameford as a better starter than Howard or even Ka'Deem Carey. Or Kevin White over Cameron Meredith. Or Leonard Floyd over Lamarr Houston? I think we're actually fortunate that White did get injured again because it's proven that the problem is White not his coaches.
Fox starts Floyd and the kid can't even toughen up and stay on the field. Fangio has done little to show any support for the kid whatsoever and Willie Young who was to be his mentor is tossing barbs at him for being the Bears massage therapists best client instead of getting his ass into practices and learning how to play at this level.
And then there's Connor Barth who at least didn't blow any kicks yesterday but then he never got a shot at an attempt at a 45-50 yard game winner because Hoyer, he of the "hot hand", couldn't even get his team close enough for a heart breaking Barth miss or a thrilling success that may have saved his job. Why Fox and Pace haven't even invited any PKs in for some look overs is another little piece of work I'll lay at their feet. They don't want to admit the mistake they made releasing Gould.
Fox and that entire front office is simply playing ostrich right now and to allow that is foolish. Someone has to step up and take accountability for this mess. If Fox won't then Pace has to and if Pace won't either then GMcC has to once again and fire them as soon as practical. If you're headed in the wrong direction do any of you just keep going that way with the excuse that the earth is round and eventually you'll get where your going?
I'm not worried one bit about looking like Cleveland going through HCs and GMs because we already do both in the front office and on the field. Anyone who can't already see that is either an ostrich too or you just don't want to. Either way it won't change it.
Here's one for all you "Hoyerites". Cutler can gain more ground and respect by simply not playing than he by starting. I serve up this crow to all of you who ever said or even though Hoyer was the better option of the two not to mention those who actually called him the better QB just because he can go an entire game without a pick.
If I play a game of toss from 20' with my grandson it's also unlikely I'll get picked too.
I'm tired of doing battle with those who can't even recall how much worse off we were at QB before Cutler arrived. With those who can't or won't recall Rex's deer in the headlights folds, or that great trio of Krenzel, Hutchinson, and Quinn we had before him. And those who can't recall sending a high first round pick to Seattle for Rick Mirer but will bitch all day long about what we we paid for Cutler.
Or how about recalling another of our 1st round QB picks, Cade McClown, every time you think we should just blow the season off so we have a shot at taking our next failed top draft pick QB. Let's total 'em up. Over the past 20 years there's been a 1st for Mirer/Fail+++, a 1st for McClown/Fail+++, and a 1st for Sexy Rexy/Fail plus or minus one. Somehow we at least managed to get to a SB with him which only proves that can happen when you have a dominant defense and a weapon like Devin Hester. Where is all that now Hoyerites?
This is a guy who some thought could be a place holder as a starting QB until we could actually draft a good QB to develop??? Given our past success ratio Hoyer might retire as the Bears starter before that happens but luckily for us we'll probably have no worse than a top ten pick every year until then to keep working on finding that QB savior. Maybe we'll even a few top fives and even a number one overall thrown in.
Given the lack of support he got from Fox if I'm Jay Cutler I won't even practice period until my thumb is 110% which I'm sure he could stretch out 'til after the bye week. I mean if Floyd can beg off from getting knocked around in practice and games over a faux calf injury then a badly sprained thumb oughta be good for at least two more weeks right?
Then at seasons end if I'm Jay I tell Ryan Pace I won't play for John Fox any longer and if Fox isn't gone then I'd like to be traded as soon as possible to whoever because anywhere is better than here. The "haters" will love it and you "Hoyerites" will have your guy owning a clean slate to either win or lose the starters job in 2017 and I'll be making bets the Bear go a 4th straight year with a top ten draft pick although what good that does us I haven't figured out yet.
Stock up, Stock Down in Bears’ Week 6 loss to Jaguars by Bryan Perez
The morning after a loss as frustrating as the Bears' Week 6 meltdown versus the Jaguars is always challenging. Finding reasons to be optimistic about a roster as maddening as Chicago's, especially when the players fans pay to see are battling one injury after another, is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
Here's a look at whose stock is on the rise and whose is falling from the Bears' Week 6 loss.
Stock up
QB Jay Cutler
Cutler's stock is up despite not taking a single snap in Week 6. While Brian Hoyer played a sound first half of football, one that gave the Bears a 13-0 lead at the break, his inability to push the ball down the field when Chicago needed to get into field goal range late in the fourth quarter exposed his shortcomings as an NFL starter and all but assured the return of Cutler into the starting lineup once he's healthy enough to play. That said, the Bears are working on a short week and will travel to Green Bay for Week 7's Thursday Night Football. If Cutler still can't go, and Hoyer somehow pulls of an upset at Lambeau Field, then who knows what will happen at quarterback moving forward.
In fairness, nobody is claiming Hoyer is a great QB. Or Cutler for that matter. Most folks are hoping we can draft a solid QB for the post-Cutler era next year.
I think everyone agrees that Hoyer is at best a career backup. Cutler is hurt. Nothing we can do about that. It is what it is. A tough season to endure for all of us.

There was at least one guy comparing Hoyer to Rogers and people agreed with him, so I'd say that people believed Hoyer was better than average as a QB.

I missed that. My bad. But most folks see Hoyer as a backup who has done his best - but his best isn't good enough. I don't hate him or Cutler. I just want to see us get a good QB for the post-Cutler era. And sooner rather than later.
And our woes go beyond the QB issue on this team. There is a lot that needs improved on offense, defense, coaching, drafting - and maybe even GMing.
I don't remember anyone agreeing w/him. but I remember that meme, it was funny.
btw, see what Phi and Hou have done recently, both those great def's have now started to give up points Houston 4 straight games of 20-30 points, Philly 2 straight games. So far the only impressive Def outing between the 2 was Philly holding Pit to 3 points. Right now those great def's look more like they benefited from butter soft schedules to start the year more then they are actually great. Time will tell though, gotta give it all a few more weeks at minimum.

That brings up the notion that the O Line's pass protection has improved. Has it? Or is it Hoyer getting rid of the ball so quickly and never taking a chance. I have not watched enough of Hoyer's career play to know if he is playing timid or if he really has a noodle arm and is playing within his limits.
It would be interesting to see what Cutler would do with the line starting to gel and Jordan Howard as the tailback. Cutler's bonehead plays are emblazoned into our minds but if there is one thing I've realized about Cutler while watching Hoyer is that he has always has had big play capability & some exciting plays over the years. As long as there was time on the clock and the Bears were within a TD there was still hope. With Hoyer, not so much.
