If this isn't a bombshell, I don't know what is. Seriously, Indy was my pick to win the AFC this year and if it wasn't for Mahomes, Luck probably would've been the MVP last year.
I honestly don't know what to make out of this. I understand he's been battling injuries for years and I'm sure it's been kinda tough for him but to just quit your team like that seems pretty selfish to me. He was paid to do a job and just gave up.
Btw, this my friends is why teams need decent and reliable backup QBs. At least Indy is lucky enough to have a decent backup in Jacoby Brissett. Can you imagine them playing Chase Daniel for 16 games? How would that turn out?

I don't think this decision is selfish at all. In fact, I think he was being selfless by continuing to rehab and fulfill his contract.
His body, his pain, his decision. I think we forget these people are human and living in pain takes a toll on anyone.

I also think many people seem to forget these guys are making millions and millions and millions of dollars, are treated like stars and are looked up to by the youth so they should definitely be held to a higher standard than people like you and I.

He's setting a good example for the kids looking up to him, no? That money and fame doesn't bring you true happiness... And your mental/physical health is a top priority for living a good long life?

Definitely going to have to disagree. Yes, he's been paid but he's also walking away from money. It doesn't sound like there's any animosity between the team and Andrew. And like other have mentioned, he's showing that your health and body are more important. He's played tough over the years, a team player through and through, so you have to know this decision was difficult.

As far as walking away from the money goes, I believe Luck is walking away with $6 million guaranteed this year. It looks like (via OTC) he has already been paid this year's guaranteed money. But I don't know for sure.
I am not being critical of Luck. In my own life, I have spent a lot of time dealing with serious medical issues including 2 major surgeries and 3 minor surgeries in the last 10 months. Before one surgery, I was almost totally bedridden in hellacious sciatic pain. I could not walk more than 15 or 30 feet at a time. I also spent 5 months in serious rehab, a lot of it very painful. So I feel a little bit qualified to talk about the personal, emotional toll this stuff takes out of you. I cannot imagine going through what Luck went through. I don't think I could have done it.
In my case I had no choice in what to do. I had a series of serious medical issues. My choice was to go through surgery, rehab, etc and hopefully get better or not have surgery and live in excruciating pain and have basically no quality of life. The decision is actually pretty easy. Luck's career choice is what causes the stuff to happen. It could be that he is one of the relatively fragile dudes in the NFL who will always be either injured or recovering from injury.
He was presented with a choice to continue the cycle of play, injury, rehab/recovery or to retire. He has earned a lot of money and is financially set. I do not think that 99% of the football fans would make any other decision than what Luck made. Knowing what I do, I certainly would agree with his decision for his situation.
On a side note, I think it a good thing to bring up Zach Miller. Look at what he went through and how he was a totally joyful warrior all the way through his several serious injuries. More than one would have ended the career of a lesser man. I mention Zach because when I hit my dark places during my experience, I thought of him and he was an inspiration to get up and continue. Lord how I admire that guy.
I think he values his life more than playing a game. This is a game. Life > playing a game. Life > money.
The guy is still in his 20s and living in chronic pain now. He has decided to walk away from the sport at this point and try to live a normal life. But "fans" boo him for this? I don't get it... well, maybe I do. Fans don't give a crap about these players as "people" and just view them as something to entertain them.
I love football, but I also respect Andrew Luck for making a choice like this. Every person is different and every player's situation is different. In his case he can still get out now and (hopefully) live the rest of his life without chronic pain. I respect that decision. I have a son about his age, and if this were my son I would support him in this 100%. These are human beings.
Did any of you feel bad about seeing Gale Sayers a few months back? I did. The guy has dementia now and doesn't even know who he is. He was strapped in a wheel chair and trotted out for the "fans" to see. It was creepy sad. I have no idea if his dementia is football related or not, but many of these ex-players have (and are) battling horrific effects of having played football. Hey, if they make that decision to go on playing as long as they can, then that's fine - but I also respect someone walking away from the game earlier to get out with their health. It's their life. Their choice. And "no" it's not all about the "fans" wanting them to "entertain" them no matter what. Those guys get to choose how to live their life. Just like we get to choose in our own lives.
