I just think they are now holding out McPhee, Miller, etc as they know they have a higher risk of injury so they get them well healed and rested for the regular season. Similar thinking fro Trevathan.
Makes sense. That was what I was getting at with McPhee too and then some.
If the rumors out there are indicating that his knee condition is degenerative which is why Baltimore let him slide away in FA then it's like a set of tires with only so many miles left on them. So do you want to waste those miles on trips to the grocery store that's four blocks away or save them for more important trips?
That might explain why what they're doing is more preservation than just simple caution and Fox will never discuss that or admit to it. If he does then he might as well paint a target on the guys pants. I'm surprise the NFL hasn't converted to the NHL method of reporting injuries simply as those above the waist or below the waist.
I think of McPhee as a transitional or bridge FA signing. We needed an solid OLB with 3-4 experience and he only has 2 guaranteed years on his contract. If we get 12+ solid games out of him this year, IMO we are getting our money's worth. Hopefully by then Houston, Young and Floyd are all at peak form so we can let McPhee leave or retire or whatever.
I'd be really surprised if Long takes another snap in a PS game this year and be really surprised if he isn't also on the field starting week 1 vs Houston. McPhee quite possibly as well.
Opening week is a winnable road game against a team that made the playoffs last year. I could care less about the next 2 preseason games.
Hey, good to see you here mp!
Nice to see you too, BiH! I'm still learning the ropes here but love it so far.

I'm thinking along the same lines MP. Kyle Long is a warrior and I figure they'd almost have to tranquilize him in order to sit him out of a regular season game but for now this gives some others some snaps to see where the depth will come from. That's still up in the air.
I'm kind of mystified the same as most about why the long recovery period for McPhee so maybe you can shed some light on that. If all it was about was a scoping to clean up some stuff are they just being cautious because maybe he can only go full tilt for so long on that knee period?
I'm at a loss to explain what's up with PM. I don't even know what he had done. Do any of you know any details?
Oh yeah that'd work real well 'til the day She Who Must Be Obeyed decides to organize your sock drawer and BAM! You're caught red handed, or pink handed maybe. Then whatta ya gonna do?
The only thing a level-headed, mature loving father can do at that point. Go yell at my teenager for bringing stuff like that into the house.
LOLOL Poor kid. Don't let him catch on though or it may cost you a "Vette" to buy his silence.

Not really. All that I've read in the past seemed to indicate it was just a routine procedure but when a guys has his knee scoped in like February or so and in August he's still somewhat gimp I have to question just how accurate any of what I've read has been.
I may be able to do a search for some prior stuff and reread it to see if there's something hiding in there I missed but I doubt it. Maybe the more recent news or rumor if you will, is that Baltimore was aware that it was a chronic problem which is why they chose not to compete with us to keep him. That may also explain why he came at such a reasonable price if that was also common knowledge among other teams.
It all leaves me wondering if we don't have another deal here like we had with Urlacher were his knee injury was also thought to be degenerative.
I saw vid of him 'running' sprints a few days ago - obvious limp in his stride and not the working out the kinks kind , the ouch this really hurts kind . Rt now I'm skeptical of how well he'll be able to play . Could be wrong , maybe they'll give him a shot b4 games and he'll be decent ... but rt now I'm not expecting much . Hope I'm wrong ( I always hope I'm wrong when I'm pessimistic about any of our players ) .

Time for a couple of rods in that knee. Sure, it might limit his ability to bend the knee and all, but if anyone ever hits him in the knee with their helmet, they are in for a rude surprise.
