We looked like what we are - a young team cobbled together due to being devastated by injuries. Even before the injuries hit us, it was still a team of new/young players learning their craft. We are playing with a backup QB and a lot of young backups everywhere you look teamwide. That is probably the real reason we had so many penalties - not because of the head coach.
I liked how the team scrapped and fought hard all game long - especially how some of the young backups performed. Yes, Meredith fumbled at a critical time in the game. I felt bad for the kid because he was stepping up bigtime until then. For an undrafted backup he didn't disappoint, until that fumble. He is already ahead of what I thought possible for him achieving at the NFL level.
Get used to this. It is going to be a long season, and many losses. Anyone who thinks it is possible to do otherwise this year, with the remaining talent we have is probably delusional.
You are right.
However, I'm liking some players that are developing. Like, Howard and Whitehair. I agree about Meredith. He is getting better.
Gotta go Meredith. Dude fumbled the ball twice (recovering it once). It's hard to give him the deflated football because statistically he had a great game but his inability to secure the ball at the end of the game was a game changer. He's a young receiver with a lot of upside but he has to learn - and learn quickly - how to secure the ball.

We have to be patient folks..
+1 I agree, but fans are never patient. I'm not too patient either. It sucks to be a fan of a team going through a major rebuild. But I just don't see a way around the painful part. We didn't get into this mess overnight. We won't get out of this mess overnight. Meanwhile the fans will have hissy-fits, over-simplify the problems, demand people be fired and want instant gratification. We could hire and fire all the GM's and HCs we want to, but it's not going to be a quick-fix here.
I wish it was easier. But there is a painful time factor involved with major rebuilds.

Not when the penalties are on vets like Massie (2 I believe) and Long and they even take one for too many men on the field. I know you're trying to stay positive but I'm gonna be more realistic.
The Bears play sloppy and undisciplined football at times and most of those penalties are drive stoppers. That why they can roll up 500 yards and still not score much. To me that is coaching because good teams don't play like that.
Winning team wins because their mistakes don't outnumber their good plays. We consistently do just the opposite and have for years no matter what the average age of the team. We did a lot of that under Trestman too when we were one of the oldest teams in the league.
Players change more rapidly than coaches but the results have been much the same for a very long time it seems to me. All I keep seeing are teams not well coached enough to win and coaches not good enough to scheme around that and get out coached on game day with annoying consistency.
Hot funk, cool punk, even it's old junk, it's still the same old Bears to me.
Yet despite all the spreading the ball around the end result is the same... 1-4. Can they even beat Jacksonville at this point? I'd rather have the QB who would have tried to hit Jeffery in the endzone with single coverage.
Jax is right up there with teams like Houston and Philly in sacks and pressures so if the running game isn't up to par and the OL can't protect Hoyer will get a taste of what Cutler went through weeks one and two.
Luckily since Howard isn't that easy to stop and Meredith his fumble is a far more dependable WR than White I'm not expecting it to be that bad but who knows. I didn't expect the first two games to be that bad either.

Bears have been rebuilding for 30+ years. When is enough enough? I can forgive rookies because they're new to the game but when guys like Massie keep making the same mistake over and over again you can't forgive that.
As Soul pointed out good teams win because their good plays outnumber their bad plays. We on the other hand have had the opposite effect.
All I want is some real coaching and a real gm. Pace is at least showing he knows how to draft. Maybe he should trade down all first round picks?
Fox has a history of having bad offensive play when he didn't have Manning. This is also the man who wanted Floyd in over Houston, Langford in over Howard, White in over Meredith.
I don't know how some have faith in Fox and Loggains to develop our QB.

That is the sad part. It is going to be painful, but eventually, the Bears will get better. I don't think the band-aid solution that Emery did will work out. The key to success is to build a foundation. The Bears will get better.

This is key to me right here. The Fox 2nd year bounce is a media creation. The idea that Fox is some kind of magical coach is a media myth. The idea that Fox is a team builder is a media myth. Fox's teams got better in his second because key players were added either through the draft and FA (specifically QB and pass rusher.) The sad thing is...at this point its too late to make a change. Fire him after this season and the rebuilding goes on. I'm willing to bet that Fangio is gone after this season (HC somewhere) and that Fox won't fire Loggains either.

I have no faith in at all because neither has ever done it. Fox's preference for playing Jimmy Clausen is how Carolina ended up with Newton to begin with. Now contrast that to his unwillingness to admit he was mistaken in failing to play Howard 'til Langford got hurt, Meredith 'til White got hurt and Floyd over Houston 'til both got hurt.
If you ask me neither White or Floyd are anywhere near ready physically or mentally to play at this level and yet Fox starts them. White gets hurt even further damaging whatever hope we might have for him and Floyd has missed more time with "owies" and other crap than nearly any other single player on the team who isn't already on the IR or PUP. Floyd is a skinny college level player whose 20-25lbs shy of the weight he need to play at in the NFL and I don't see him ever growing into it.
For two top ten picks who were drafted to make an immediate impact these guys have failed miserably and are being out played by UDFAs. We should have learned from the White deal not to part ways with a productive vet before we know we've secured his replacement and now some want to trade Cutler and roll the dice on Pace and Fox drafting a young QB??? WR and a Pass Rusher are usually two can't miss positions in the top ten of a draft and yet we've missed on both. QB is one of the riskiest picks but we should trust these guys to find us the right one???

To me, the rebuilding began with the hiring of Ryan Pace. The other 90+ years of Bears history is just that. History. All that matters to me now is that the Bears dig out of this very deep hole they are in talent-wise. We have a start, but it's not finished. It takes a level of talent to win consistently. We don't have that. Not yet.
In one sense, Pace is like our young team. He is learning his craft, just like all these young people are. The young players will make some mistakes. That's just part of the growing pains. Pace is also going to make mistakes. And he has. But my hope is that most of these youngsters will learn and grow into solid players. Meredith hurt the team today, but he also showed a lot of promise. A knee-jerk reaction would be to give up on him and cut him from the team tomorrow. That would be pretty stupid and of course it's not going to happen. They will work with the kid and hopefully he will learn to be better. Same with Pace. He doesn't strike me as a stupid man. In fact he strikes me as a bright young man who will grow to be a solid GM for us. But it won't happen without some mistakes along the way.
People can learn, change and grow to be better. Even older people. I tell my kids that wise people continue to learn and get better throughout their entire life. People want to define John Fox by his past, or write him off as being an old coach that can't be successful here. That may not be accurate regarding his tenure here in Chicago. Maybe he will be a good coach here. Maybe not. I'm not going to give up on him yet.
I appreciate your comment from Soul about how good teams make more good plays than bad plays. But we are not a good team. Not yet anyway. When our talent is better than what we now have, I believe we will make more good plays. But right now we are suffering the pain of not being a good team. And you don't become a good team overnight. The rebuild began under Ryan Pace. We are 5 games into his 2nd season. That's too early for me to definitively judge him or Fox. That's my 2-cents worth anyway.
