OK, humor me on this one. With the new Cutler threads that he may not be in the plans floating around I thought, why the hell not? Anything goes but now to the nitty gritty. I figure as I said in another thread we could go 1-7 or 2-6 by the Bye week. But maybe we end up 3-5, who knows. The 2nd half of the season looks a bit tougher so I am currently thinking we should top out at 5-6 wins, maybe 7 with a bit of luck. Judging from historical drafts (And this isn't accurate either) that should place us at about the 10-15 pick range. So hear goes in one foul swoop:
All before June 1 cuts:
Cutler 14M Massie 5M Houston 5M
That right there gives you an extra 24M to add to the project 55M we should have if the CAP ends up being 166M like overcap has us for 2017.
So with 79M you can buy 2-3 more impact FA's and I thought nothing better than starting with a going into his prime CB. The first 2 that jump out at me are Trumaine Johnson and Stephen Gilmore. They are both 6.1 or taller and have had good ratings/stats as CB's the past 2 or more years. They will both be 27 in 2017 so we get 3-4 of their best years. No price tag yet. Like I said its too early for this shit.
Then you hit the draft and get the following as of today:
Rd 1: Trade up to 5-7 if he is still there and grab Cam Robinson. He could be the prototypical LT for years to come and has the championship pedigree from a winning program like Alabama. Rd 2: A reach right now but I got nothing better at this stage. Luke Falk from Washington State has a good arm and plays the spread offense which a lot say is not the kind of training you need for the NFL. But he seems to be mature and can possibly be a diamond in the rough. He is currently being forecast as a round 3-5 but anything can happen in this crapshoot we call the draft. hell his stock can rise 2 rounds in a matter of months just based on his college play.
Look for another RT in FA and make Leno the swing tackle.
Honestly do not think we are in the market for a LT. Right or wrong, I think that is the case.
Possibly and I would venture to guess Robinson with his talent is overkill for a RT. He has LT written all over him. My reasoning for him was I don't think we draft high enough to get a top 5 let alone a top 3 pick for one of the top 3 QB's.
I think the team will look into drafting a RT and letting them compete w/Massie, mainly b/c Massie and Long are buddies IRL. They can draft someone to compete though, especially after this year.
I still think they believe in Leno.
What they will do is look to continue to build the def via FA, probably grab a big DE and a couple DB's. If they were to bring in a big named OT I would be thrilled though.
The draft should center around a QB, OL and def, and reality is they need a legit TE also.

Ric, if they cut at least Cutler and Houston (Big risk now after 2 ACL surgeries) you have more than enough CAP (74M) to get one really good playmaking CB and possibly a great TE, although I haven't checked what the FA TE market looks like at this very minute.
Bumping this shit again, what thinks ye now a week away from bye week Bears nation?
I think we sign one of those top 2 CB's mentioned above and:
1. Pick Myles Garrett as MOTM is advocating in his threads with the 2nd or 3rd pick. Shores up the D even more and you move Fuller to safety. 2. Julie'n Davenport, OT, Bucknell 3. Luke Falk Washington State, very good numbers but a spread offense. Can he learn the NFL pro game?
Release: Jay Cutler ( $14 million in cap saving with $2 million in dead cap ) Pernell McPhee ( $6,325,000 in cap saving with $1,500,000 in dead cap ) Lamarr Houston ( $5,010,000 in cap saving with $1,980,000 in dead cap ) Bobby Massie ( $5,050,000 in cap saving with $1,000,000 in dead cap ) Tracy Porter ( $3,450,000 in cap saving with $600,000 in dead cap ) I believe he's an injury prone player waiting to happen Eddie Royal ( $5,000,000 in cap saving with $0 in dead cap ) Back to back injuries isn't going to help us out. Its better to get young and cheaper
We would have 38+ million in cap space added if we don't release Royal but if we do we would have 43+ million in cap space added.
Next I try to lock up Alshon Jeffery. The cheaper the better. Next I sign Eric Berry to a nice contract to help fix our lack luster secondary. Place Fuller at FS as well and have some competition with Amos there. I believe Fuller would win and with Berry's help we could have some good safeties that can ball hawk. If Rams don't lock up Trumaine Johnson maybe attempt to sign him as well?
Our secondary would be fix and our defense would look much better.
With draft is hard to say since we don't know where everyone will fall. I want Myles Garrett. I believe he's the missing piece for this defense to become a real threat.
When February 2017 arrives then I'll start thinking about FA because it'll be a month away and then from all the hype and hoopla maybe we can figure out who to draft but like it or not it's pretty obvious Pace will finally have to spend big on some Class A young free agent talent. We need impact players and we sure aren't drafting and developing any very quickly.
Unless Fox is still here. In that case save the money and use it after he gone otherwise you might just as well flush in down the crapper.
