Yeah I think I need to see at least 2 more good games from Hoyer before I proclaim as the next winner of the "Dink and Dunk Game Manager QB" award. With that said let's see how he honestly fares against much better defenses after the Colts game.
Hoyer isn't even a great backup. he's just outplaying Cutler who for whatever reason has seriously regressed. You cannot turn the ball over 3 times in 2 games w/only 1 td. It's been a brutal start for Cutler.
Hoyer has not really faired better at scoring, but he's at least been safe w/the ball, which allows the entire team to play better.
Hoyer has looked better because
A) he played a terrible defense this week who couldn't stop the run and he had all day to throw most dropbacks and
B) he racked up garbage yards in Dallas (against another crap defense) after the game was over. Did we score ANY points with Hoyer at the helm before the game was decided?
Cutler was under siege the 2nd half of week 1 (he played well when the pass pro was decent in the first half) and all of week 2. We were all talking about how the playcalling was terrible, the run game was non-existent, and the OL was a sieve. I'd like to see an apples-to-apples comparison in QBs.
Cutler is the better QB if all else is equal IMO. Yes, I know that isn't saying much because JC is nothing special either.
"For as long as he's been in the league you'd think he'd have learned alot by now but he still makes the same mistakes"
I think this is the part about Cutler that drives people crazy. I know I just about stroke out anymore when I see Jay fumble the ball like he does. The ints don't bother me as much anymore... it's just Jay's gig. He will always break your heart by throwing the int at a key time in a game. It's what he does. But the fumbles drive me nuts. LOL. The guy has made me crazy after watching him all of these years. I'll gladly take a QB in the draft with a bit (a bit) less arm strength, but who has better pocket-presence, can consistently get the ball out quicker as needed, who can protect the football better, and who has a better football IQ. I am not a Cutler hater. I just hate his play.
I agree with you, JABF. The most maddening thing about Cutler has been his lack of "clock in head" or "pocket awareness" or whatever you want to call it. He's the anti-Rodgers in that sense. It looked like last year he had taken a big step in improving that but apparently not.
I'm all for the team moving on from him next offseason (and I think they already have decided too) but I still think he gives the team its best chance to win when healthy. Let him audition for a job elsewhere this year. LA Rams anyone?

And there in lies the problem, and why it really doesn't matter. Hoyer is nothing special, but he's safe w/the ball. Cutler can probably produce as much if not better, but he'll turn the ball over which will neutralize the extra points. It's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation.
WNML, b/c 17 points against a bad def that's why. That's not good, up until that week det had given up 2 30 + point games, and 1 16. Tennessee would have scored more also, but they turned the ball over 2 times. For an error free game(no int's no fumbles) 17 points is just not good enough against that poor of a defense.
What Hoyer does well is understand and play w/in the system and play calls, and he keeps the ball safe. But in the end you have to score while protecting the ball, cannot rely on a qb that cannot put up 23+ points against the bottom defenses.
In fact, thats not what Hoyer does well. He did it well in this game, but Hoyer could have 3 int's vs Indy, no problem

I have to believe that Pace has mentally moved on from Cutler and is quietly researching his options for a new starter in 2017. I certainly hope Hoyer isn't anything but a Plan B for next season.
BH has been safe with the ball thus far I agree. We have also seen games from him where he hasn't been. We shall see the next few weeks...
Last night I rewatched our games vs Philly, and before the fumble Jay played some mean football, had a few longer passes Brian can only dream of. But, then comes that famous JC fumble or interceptions and everything falls to pieces, all quality football down the drain.

Hoyer's job is to steer the offense efficiently and beat the bad teams on the schedule, keeping the Bears at the 0.500 mark. He's not going to beat a playoff team. Hoyer's not going to turn into a starter no matter how many reps he gets.
He's a good backup. I don't get why you keep looking at him like he's supposed to be able to win a Superbowl. He only scored 17 points. He could have scored 0 points. Or turned it over 9 times in two games like the Jets. Instead, the rest of the team was able to beat the Lions.
