The Chicago Bears brought in seven players for a tryout this week during mandatory veteran minicamp and one of them caught their eye. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Bears have signed outside linebacker Kasim Edebali to a contract. There has not been any word on who will be removed from the roster for Edebali to take his place.
Edebali entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2014. Following that year's draft he was signed by the New Orleans Saints. At the time, current Bears general manager Ryan Pace held the title of Director of Player Personnel with the Saints. As a rookie that season, Edebali appeared in all 16 games with New Orleans. During that stretch he recorded 22 tackles, including 15 solo. He also recorded two sacks and one forced fumble.
In his second season he saw action once again in all 16 games, this time making one start. He ended the year with 21 tackles, including 18 solo tackles. He also finished the season with a career-high five sacks and recorded two pass deflections. Edebali once again appeared in all 16 games for the Saints in 2016 with one start. He ended the year with just 11 tackles, one sack and one pass deflection.
He went on to sign a one-year deal as a free agent last offseason with the Denver Broncos. He saw action in nine games but only recorded one tackle before he was released by the team in November. Not long after he was waived by the Broncos he was picked up by the Detroit Lions. He appeared in four games for Detroit and was waived before recording a tackle in December. He then spent one week with the Los Angeles Rams in late December before he was claimed off waivers by the Saints in late December but did not appear in a game for the team.
Prior to entering the NFL, Edebali was listed as a three-star recruit with a 0.8111 composite score by 247Sports as part of the Class of 2009. He was ranked 1,495th overall in the country, 61st among defensive ends and third from the state of New Hampshire out of Kimball Union Academy. After taking a visit to Boston College in December 2008 he signed with the school and enrolled that summer.
Edebali did not play during his first year on campus before appearing in 13 games in 2010. He finished that year with 13 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one pass deflection. The following year he saw his role increase, recording 27 tackles and five pass deflections. In 2012 he recorded 59 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks before taking off in his senior year. He finished the 2013 season with 68 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, four pass deflections, four forced fumbles and 8.5 sacks. Despite his production as a senior he went undrafted.
He now joins a Bears outside linebacker corps that lacks a lot of depth. Leonard Floyd is the team's top pass-rusher but he is returning from an injury. Aaron Lynch signed in Chicago on a one-year prove-it deal, while Sam Acho is steady but not flashy. Isaiah Irving is another candidate to make the roster but has a lot left to prove. Edebali will have a chance next month in training camp to prove he is worth keeping around on a defense that desperately needs help at his position.
