This year and next may be our last hurrahs for major additions in FA. GMcC has also made it clear the objective is to build via the draft. We've been a bit handicapped these last two years by trading picks to move up and while I wouldn't say it's impossible this year without a 3rd to dangle it's less likely.
Once we get through this draft and see how the roster shapes up this fall it'll be easier to spot those we'll look to replace but certainly Massie and Sims are two who may well be on that list and that's $12 mil of cap. If we draft an ILB who can start soon it's possible Trevathan may also go. That's another $3.5 mil net.
If we begin to develop more of our draftees and UDFA we should be fine as far as keeping or core intact and adding a key player or two.
That is also my hope. Unless we have a situation where we think we can get into the SB with a particular guy, but I think we keep active in FA, but pick and choose more in the bargain bin where we think they have upside. We have not done very well with that approach in the past though.
I have no problem with Pace going after a top dog as we did with Pep as long as they make sure he's a bona fide All Pro at his position and we have a desperate need. Other than that I'd do as your suggesting and look at second tier guys who fit and have upside.

Definitely in favor of this. Just stay away from the Jared Allens of the world.
The Bears (right now at least) will have the lowest available CAP for the teams in our division. I generally like the way we manage our CAP, so this surprised me. I know we have a few people that are kind of "CAP guys". Anyone know why that is and if there is CAP we expect to shed prior to next year? Even GB with their goofy contracts will have more CAP than we do.
BIH, just for giggles you can use the spotrac roster tool and make cuts. I cut Sims and White next year and you have 49M CAP. Add any rollover from this year which might be 5-10M and another 8M for CAP level raise and now you have between 62-67M. Still a good chunk to work with.

Ha ha, you're like a mad scientist with that Spotrac aren't you. Add a little this, subtract a little that.
I have to admit that site is a Godsend. Waaaaay back in the early days of DaBears I used to have a spreadsheet I kept up by hand. That was a lot of work that's now being done for us.

Overthecap is also good. Still waiting for either to clarify voiding Glennon's 2.5M bonus.

I don't want to cut White. I want to pay White. That would mean he finally became the player we need him to be. There is a focus on him this year and I am looking forward to seeing if having that focus can make the player he once was.

Good, I'm going to go back and cut Bellamy to make the world right again.

Thing is he has a 13M CAP charge in 19 and a decision to pick up his 5th year option is due soon.
