I think that's only b/c he hasn't done it though isn't it? Everything I've read said he has the speed and bend to do it. Was there something else that I was missing when I read about him?
Speedwise he's fine, but I was reading he doesn't hold up well at the point of attack and he tends to over run plays...he's a little slow to diagnose. I haven't had the chance to watch a ton of film on him so I'm going off what I've read...once I dive into the film I'll have a more informed opinion.
Ya I heard that also, about the slow to diagnose, but from what I was reading from people that follow V Tech football, they said the def is supposed to attack their gaps at the snap, there isn't a lot of reading and reacting, their athletes are just supposed to make plays, so the people that watch aren't sure if he's unable to diagnose or if it's just what he's asked to do.
Haven't seen anything about point of attack myself. Just about everything I've read is that it'll be up to who is his coaches and what they ask him to do. I think it was Colleman that showed him running stride for stride w/a RB that ran a wheel route and broke up the pass and said basically said you don't see that in a 6'5" 250+pound linebacker and that's why he'll go top 10. It's probably where the Urlacher comps come from also. Guy is just a freak athlete, and you can't teach that.

Yeah...he's got great bloodlines...dad was a pro bowl tight end with the Dolphins and all 3 of his brothers play or played D1 ball.

Good for thoroughbreds and show dogs but with football players maybe a little more iffy. LOL
If we're prepared to spend some time finding out whether he can be a first class edge rusher and want him I won't object. Worst case scenario is he'll probably be a good all around LB.

Kind of like the Longs and Fullers and Mannings and Matthews? More then just show dogs in there
I was loving the idea of Edmunds, but have cooled on him a bit. I was reading somewhere (may have been on this site but don't recall) that he makes a lot of arm tackles indicating he isn't diagnosing plays well, but in college he had the athletic ability to make up for it and still make the tackle. That isn't going to fly in the NFl with bigger, faster players. So, his lack of football instincts scares me a little. Although, I am trying to keep in mind that he's really young and still developing.
There are lots of guys who get by in FBS college ball who have to really work at adapting to the NFL game. Because they are athletic freaks they get by with marginal technique in college and then find that everybody in the NFL has freakish skills.
So if that is all there is wrong with Edmunds, I don't think it is necessarily a reason not to draft him. If there is concerns about how fast he will pick up the NFL game, that starts to become an issue in my mind. So if the coaching staff feel they can get him up to speed quickly on the technique side, I'd be OK with taking him at #8.

And there's a list of failures equally long or longer. Three that come to mind are Jarrett Payton, Eddie Payton, and Luke Butkus, Dick's nephew. It's not always in the genes.
No one doubts Edmunds raw talent. His readiness is the only major question as well as a hesitancy of where to play him but if you're looking for a pure edge guy he isn't. From that perspective the others who are edge guys may be more effective now. Tough to say which is why there's some uncertainty about where to rank him.
In another year when a more sure choice wasn't available I'd probably be all in on the guy but I have somewhat the same feelings I did about Floyd who was also not a natural edge rusher. I don't feel Edmunds is a bad pick I just wonder if he'll be the best pick.
