Later this afternoon we will know who the pool of FA's really are. Any speculation prior to that is just dartboard stuff (same as Emery's drafting). Even when you know who the pool consists of, you don't know how bad other teams want people or who they want, so it's still largely a guessing game, but you do know what position certain teams need so at least there is some educated guessing that can go into it.
I like Robinson a lot but I'm also wary if only because JAX decided not to tag him. If his own team won't consider him untouchable and tag him that should throw up some caution flags.
As it stands we'll need to tender Meredith whose coming off his own serious injuries for $2.7 mil and we'll also have the perennially injured Kevin White getting $2.7 mil guaranteed in the last year of his deal. Do we want to risk another $25-$30 mil or more and $14-$15 mil a year on yet another injured WR?
I'm not saying we should avoid Robinson but much like McPhee I think we have to ask what does JAX know that we don't if they feel they won't risk $15 mil tagging him. As good as this looks I think we need to proceed with caution.

Maybe Robinson should be willing to accept that as well.
Don't know how true it is but from what I read from other Jags fans, Bortles contract extension is one of the reasons ARob isn't getting extended.
Something about some unwanted tension between the two...
Whatever the reason I would still advise caution here. Let's look at our past attempts to fill a WR slot through FA.
Eddie Royal got $10 mil guaranteed and couldn't stay on the field enough to pay off. Marcus Wheaton got $6 mil out of $11 mil guaranteed and so far he's a major bust. We've done far better with second tier FA like Meredith and Inman and we still don't know where we stand with Meredith or our former #7 pick White.
Robinson could be a guy who returns to top form and becomes an All Pro or he could end up being another injury problem whose best days are behind him. I don't think that will be the case nonetheless I'd tread cautiously here and maybe look more at the others who are available, cheaper, and not rehabbing from a serious injury.
Overall we need a battery of receivers in this offense not just a single #1. For my money I'd shoot for guys in the second tier, sign a nifty slot guy like Wilson, and spend a draft pick on one in round #2 or #4. This draft lacks top WR talent but it's deep in 2nd tier type with good size and speed so I'd play the numbers game this year.

I agree that i'm not the biggest fan of spending a ton of money on a hurt WR but what do we do with all this cap space?
There is no point on saving this cap space while we waste these next few years getting Howard on a bargain. Same with Floyd and Trubisky if they take the next step. We got a short window to front load big name players before our own big name players start demanding crazy money.
Its time to surround Trubisky with talent and let him prove to us if he's a franchise QB or not. This would also take a major need away from the team.
We have been shooting for second tier guys since Pace came here and it hasn't worked out. When do we try something new?

Only if we can front load all the contracts, problem is that normally you aren't going to get your top end players via front loaded contracts, so the cap space is going to end up hurting come time to re sign guys like Howard/Floyd/Trubs/Jackson etc.

Honestly, I don't worry about the last times. Each person is an individual. We have a different QB and coaches to boot. I know you can't forget what happened, but at the same time it is not indicative of what it will be with a new player today.

Robinson is my preferred big-name WR target. Has been all along. Jax didn’t tag him cuz they also have Lee to sign, used (wasted) big money on Bortles, and are pretty tight cap-wise with a lot of coin tied up in their D. AR is a true #1 WR who has produced even with crappy QB play and he’s young. His ACL was in week 1, not week 16, and from what I’ve read he will be 100% ready to go certainly by camp. ACL tears are not the huge red flag they used to be as reconstructive surgery has improved greatly over the last 20 years.
Robinson, Meredith, and White would be the outside WR crew. Wilson shouldn’t cost much and is rumored to be all but official coming to Chicago thanks to the Nagy connection. That obviates the need to re-sign Wright. Bellamy, Inman, and a day 3 pick (4th-5th round) can compete for the backup 1-2 spots with Wilson being the primary slot guy. That’s a huge improvement in top-line talent and depth over the dumpster fire we had last year.
And it it shouldn’t be all that expensive either. Robinson will obviously cost some money and I’d like to see Pace “stretch” there to get him. Wilson won’t cost much. Let Wright go and cut Wheaton. The net “cost” there really isn’t much and it eliminates the need to draft a WR in round 1 or 2.
