How do we know that Graham won't turn into a James Harrison ie refuse to mentor anyone who took playing time away from him? I've read that most players don't care to mentor their replacement. Bring back Miller as TE coach if you want a tutor for Shaheen..either that or keep Sims away from him.
That would be my concern with Graham. If he was forced to sign for little money on a one year deal he'd be looking to play for a better one not sit and mentor some young stud TE. At least that's the mental picture I have of Graham.
What's odd to me is how so many didn't want Cutler here to mentor Trubisky yet knowing Cutler's personality he would no have resented that or shied away from it. He would have competed far better than Glennon did but also realized Mitch was the future and probably planned to retire when it finally happened as he did.
Now the same guys who didn't want Cutler as a mentor for Mitch thing Graham would be a good mentor for Shaheen?
If we're going to sign a guy who's more receiver than blocker to add to the tight end group I'd rather go after a guy like Trey Burton, or Austin Sefarian Jenkins. Neither should break the bank and they're both young.
And I'll go one step farther. How do we know Brown or Braunecker can't step up into a solid backup and rotational role. These are guys who were never used much either. As poorly prepared as many of these guys were and as narrowly focused as that offense was I'd have a hard time picking out secondary talent anyway. They seldom played.

Yeah...and I'm not necessarily down on Shaheen...when he got opportunities he did a lot with them this year. I don't think he's as far off as some think...he just needs to be put on the field.

I believe they all do if for no other reason than to see what we've got in them.
There have been times Brown has shown some skills that would remind us of Miller but he lacks Zach's experience. Zach isn't coming back so let's see what this kid can do.
Braunecker was the top Combine TE and nearly every category tested yet he's done little but play STeams.
We have Shaheen and we still have guaranteed $$$ committed to Sims so why with higher needs should we be out shopping for more TEs this year other than possibly a late draft pick or an UDFA? It makes no sense to me.

+1 The offense was so screwed up I don't think we will begin to know what we have personnel-wise, until a good coaching staff arrives. JMO.

Yep. We have TEs what we don't have is capable WRs. If we're gonna FA shop for anything it should be them.
Couple thoughts. If they sign him them they should use him mostly as a WR. If not then I see him as hurting the development of Shaheen. He'd have to be pretty cheap in order for me to want him.
Hopefully Pace can provide young talented players who can be with Trubisky for a number of years, and grow/mature with him. Just getting an older guy who may be a one-season wonder, doesn't seem the best way to build an offense around our new QB.

like Erin rodgers and Jordy Nelson. Brady and Gronk.
etc etc.
nothing like instinctively knowing what the other guy is going to do based on all that experience and growing together.
