The Chicago Bears are about four days away from moving on from John Fox. It is unclear who they have in mind to replace Fox, but they will likely explore their options. Over the coming weeks, we will highlight a few coaches and make the case for, and against their chances of being the Chicago Bears new head coach. This edition will be Frank Reich.
For:
He is the offensive coordinator for an offense that came out of nowhere and exploded onto the scene. Reich is a former quarterback, and clearly has a strong working relationship with Carson Wentz. Reich has been around the league and has the connections to put together a very strong staff. He has yet to get a coaching chance, and the Bears may be his chance.
Against:
Aside from inherit Carson Wentz, and adjust to a Doug Pederson offense, what has Frank Reich necessarily done? His time before Philadelphia was a disaster in San Diego where Philip Rivers clearly favored Ken Whisenhunt. Before that he was a receivers coach on a team that inherited Larry Fitzgerald for one season. From 2008-11 he was an offensive coach and receivers coach for the Colts. Again, having inherited Reggie Wayne and Peyton Manning. He did not build any of those players up, he came in when they were established. His quarterbacks coach, John DeFilippo has a better coaching track record and would be a better bet. Reich seems like reaching for a name with no substance attached behind it.
John DeFilippo is an intriguing candidate. Multiple people have mentioned that HE may be the better candidate over Reich. I don't know if that is true or not. But it is interesting to note.
I was wondering why I heard more about Philly's QB coach instead of their OC. He sounds like a coach who is a product of his players not the other way around.

Yep. That name does keep coming up. I think he and Matt Nagy the Chiefs OC may be this years Sean McVay.
To be honest I believe these are the kind of guys Pace is gonna shoot for and maybe a college guy like Shaw as well. I think he wants a HC closer to his own age and point of view so the 50 year old plus guys are probably not highest on his list.
That would tend to eliminate Toub and Fangio which is too bad but if we fail to find a good fit between HC and GM again history will repeat itself.

I don't necessarily agree that Reich is simply a name with no substance attached but for some guys a coordinator job is their best and highest position. And again thinking that Pace will opt for a younger HC that also puts Reich farther down on his list if at all.

I don't know what to think of Reich. Philly has played extremely well this season but let's not get carried away. So far Wentz and the Eagles are a one-year wonder. Way too early to tell if Wentz really is that great or not.
DeFelippo needs to become an OC first before he gets an opportunity to be HC somewhere imo.

He has a bit of OC experience, but not much. One year with the Browns in 2015 were he had crazy Johnny Manziel as his QB (Austin Davis & McGown started some games that year), and one year in college in 2011. Here's his bio from Wiki:
As coach: Fordham (2000) Quarterbacks coach
Notre Dame (2001–2002) Graduate assistant
Columbia (2003–2004) Quarterbacks coach
New York Giants (2005–2006) Offensive quality control coordinator
Oakland Raiders (2007–2008) Quarterbacks coach
New York Jets (2009) Quarterbacks coach
San Jose State (2010) Quarterbacks coach
San Jose State (2011) Offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach
Oakland Raiders (2012–2014) Quarterbacks coach
Cleveland Browns (2015) Offensive coordinator
Philadelphia Eagles (2016–present) Quarterbacks coach

Typically that's the ladder Grizz. Few guys if any jump from a position coach to HC without having spent time as coordinators. I think with someone like DeFilippo he'd have to come with a strong staff and maybe a DC whose also been a HC like a Chuck Pagano.
Teams are looking for this years Sean McVay who did have two years as OC with the 'Skins but what may also help is he has Wade Phillips as his DC and Wade has been an NFL HC. But I agree with you. There's more likelihood of hiring someone else who'd the bring in DeFilippo as his OC.
