I never called either of them a bust and even here Monsters just says so far they look like busts.
I would say both are under achieving their expectation so far and I'd leave it at that. Top ten picks carry with them the expectation to be difference makers and make impact plays. Not only are we not seeing any of that from them but it also looks like it may be awhile before we do.
I'm not holding either personally responsible for possibly being over hyped. That's on the Bears front office. But I am holding them responsible for understanding their lofty draft status and what's expected of them. If that means they have to work twice as hard as they've been doing to get there then that's what they need to do. They're being well paid for their extra effort.
Saying they look like busts is a safe way of saying they are busts. You can be negative and critical and say I was right but if you are wrong you can Say "look at me I was right". Both these guys just played in their first NFL game. Floyd looked good White didn't. Can we wait until after their Rookie or Red shirt rookie years before tossing this around.
No one called him a bust Mike. What has been said is that he played reasonably well but overall it was a middlin' performance for a guy who was billed as a speedy edge rusher and he has been. I don't think you can blame fans for expecting more when Floyd was as hyped as he was when he was drafted.
What compounds that feeling is when your DC comes out and says he wasn't impressed with the pass rush yet he left his best pass rusher sitting on the bench most of the game. So the actual criticism is being leveled more at that than it is Floyd himself.
This notion that first rd picks need to be great week 1 is a bogus standard. Go down the drafted list and find me 10 players from the first round who were studs week 1. Vernon Butler had one tackle and one sack. Paxton Lynch rode the bench. Kenny Clark had 1 assist tackle. Jalen Ramsey was very sketchy in coverage. Karl Joseph didn't play. Sheldon Rankins is on IR. William Jackson is on IR. Darron Lee looked Shea McC Like and got 50/100 grade by PFF. DeForest Buckner was pulled from his game after messing up. Jared Goff didn't start
White and Floyd may be busts - many first rounders are throughout the league - but calling them busts at this stage is insane.
Agreed and I never have or even implied either of them are at this point in time. Of the two White is the bigger disappointment at the moment. I would say Floyd held is own and showed the game is not beyond him. So far White has not but that's still a "so far". What he does this week after a poor showing last week will tell us a lot.
I'm only saying that more is expected of top ten picks and it is expected from them faster because they are usually selected higher due to their readiness to contribute year one. It may be unfortunate that both were selected more for their upside than their ability to produce day one. That may not be their fault either but it tends to be their problem just the same.
Expectations will always be higher for those picks and we both know that teams do little to temper those expectations either so it is what it is. Plus....I'm just an impatient kind of guy. It's one of my many character flaws. LOL
