"Much has been made, correctly, of coach John Fox’s miserable 12-30 record in his tenure with the Bears, but little has been said of the fact that prodigy Pace shares that mark in his tenure as a GM.
Does anyone really know where one guy ends and the other begins? How has Pace escaped criticism for his role in this farce? Does nobody realize that his predecessor, Phil Emery, was 22-20 at the same point in his third year? Things fell apart for Emery and the Bears that season with five losses to close the year at 5-11. Marc Trestman had to go, and Emery was thrown out with him.
No they arent interlocked. Not sure why emery/trestman were..but when it all falls apart that bad you start over. You almost never see a gm only get one HC
Should be or not the pure fact is they aren't. Whether we all want to accept it or not Focks was not exactly Pace's top pick for a HC but he was the most palatable choice for an ownership who didn't want to be embarrassed again by a HC and GM both of whom seemed clearly over their heads running the team.
Pace was a rookie GM and therefore a gamble so Focks was hired for his reputation as much as anything.
No one knew Focks could be this bad and while they should be even more embarrassed by now Teddy Bears and GMcC are making themselves scarce as usual so they won't have to face the media harassment 'til after Fox is gone at which time they'll talk about winning Bears football again under a new regime and simply expect us to believe it because they said it.
Me? I'm taking a different Bears bus this time. The one they've been providing seems to stall or crash too often.

I think he should have a 2nd opportunity with a new coaching staff. But, regarding the mistakes and the team record over the past 3 years, it's hard for me to accept that NONE of this is on Pace. At some point, is he a "real" GM or just in name only... some dufus guy collecting a paycheck and the sinister McCaskeys & Sweaty Teddy are making the mistakes? I can't buy that. Some of this is on Pace. Doesn't mean he can't end up being a good GM. But I don't buy the teflon man thing either.

Nor do I. His swings and misses in 2017 FA are gonna be legendary based on Glennon alone.
This has been my question all along. Just how much actual control does he have?
If he wanted to replace Fox in January but was told no then that also set off a domino effect that we're seeing now and we've been down this road already so there's no need for a rinse and repeat.
Pace was brought in with a mandate to build via the draft which he has done pretty well at but limiting a team to only that way of rebuilding will take the better part of a decade. Some draftees will have their careers impacted or ended via injuries. Others won't pan out. Some will leave as UFAs. All of that has happened to the Bears so far.
FA is a necessity but if Teddy Bears and GMcC have put a lid on the kind of money Pace can spend and how much he can guarantee any one player well then ownership is handicapping their own GM via their own rules about how it can be approached and by setting hard limits on spending.
So by this point in time who really know anything more than the plan is not working and it needs some major changes.
No...they shouldn't be. He should get another opportunity to hire a coach. Has he made some missteps? Yep. But to compare this situation to the situation Emory and Trestman took over is foolish in my opinion. Two different teams in two different situations. Overall I like what Pace has done, and while the record won't show it, and he hasn't done as good a job as I thought he would, the one thing Fox has achieved here, along with Pace is creating an environment where players won't lay down. Remember those blow outs in Tresty's last year where the team basically gave up? The culture in that locker room was bad...and that needed to be changed.

+1 I agree. Next season, all eyes will be on Ryan Pace though, to see where he takes this team from here. At that point he will have had 4 years here. A 5 to 8 win season at that point is not good. In my book it will be a failure.
I don't understand why we would accept that next year if it happens. At some point we were supposed to get better than Lovie Smith (or for that matter the Wanny's, Jauron's, etc... going back 30 years or so). Why would it be okay to be in last place in our division again, with a crappy record? I don't get that. Either the team is a winner. Or it is a loser. Pace is the guy managing this team. He is the GM. He either manages it to success, or failure. Even "mediocre" is failure... heck, we had that under Lovie Smith.
Pace is on the hot seat starting next season. Four years in its his team, he has complete ownership of the roster. Another sub-500 season and it cold be his last. He deserves three with Mitch and 2 with his own coach. But we will see.
Short Answer: No they shouldn't be since they are two separate positions within the business
Long Answer: No they shouldn't be since they are two separate positions within the business...and if you think they should, you should find the tallest building in Chicago and learn how to fly.

Emery inherited a pretty good/close to window shutting roster and added largely terrible draft picks while moving on from vets who could still play. The record was better because the holdovers were actually solid.
Pace inherited the aftermath.
Emery choose to hire a compete dud. There's a lot of evidence that Fox was forced on pace in a flawed "coaching search committee."
I'm sure Pace was fine with Fox because because he knew the roster sucked anyway and he would get autonomy in the next hire of he put up in the rebuild. IMHO, pace has very much been one of the better drafters since his hire and deserves to scout his own coach for phase 2.
