The Chicago Bears have had plenty of embarrassing moments this season, but John Fox might have had the worst of the worst in the second quarter against the Green Bay Packers.
Running back Benny Cunningham took a Mitchell Trubisky screen pass 24 yards to the goal line, diving for the pylon to try and get the touchdown. The referees initially ruled him short of the touchdown, out of bounds at the one.
Then John Fox, with the help of his replay staff up in the coaches box, had the genius idea to challenge the ruling on the field. They got greedy, thinking Cunningham had a touchdown on the play instead of 1st and Goal.
That’s when disaster struck.
The replay officials ruled that Cunningham fumbled the ball as he dove to the endzone. Because the ball hit the pylon as he fumbled, it was ruled as though he fumbled the ball out of the endzone, which resulted in a touchback and gave the Packers the ball at the 20.
The replays shows very clearly that Cunningham never had control of the ball when hits the pylon. So Focks....just what didn't you like about a 1st and goal on the one when you challenge a play as risky as that one?
If Wright would have made his block Cunningham could have waltzed in untouched. Great execution there Kendall. If you're gonna block the guy put you head and your hands into actually blocking him instead of just trying to grab him. Jeezus but for a bunch of vets some of these guys play as dumb as Focks coaches.
I still think his foot was out of bounds before he completely loses the ball. I don't think there was enough to overturn the call. I do agree that it was a terrible review by Fox. It was very obvious that it wasn't a TD right away. Regardless of that, I think the Packers may have challenged it if they had the time and the same result would've happened.

Nope. Go back to the replay and watch it from about the 15 second mark on. His shoe never touches the white. If it had they would have easily picked that up.
There were actually two stupid decisions;
1) Why after a successful play did Cunningham not keep the ball secure. It's one thing to reach but he let go with both hands like he was trying to toss the ball over the pylon. How many years have these guys played football without knowing that you have to have possession when you cross the plane of the goal?
2) Focks should have just STFU and ran the next play as quickly as he could. For a so called "experienced" HC I've yet to see him make many good decisions. He's a horrible game day coach consistently mismanaging the clock and getting out coached nearly ever game. Or should we call it...."Out Foxed".

I was just reading that Cunningham says that play is entirely on him. The Coaches always say never reach for the post unless it is 4th down. Not that it means anything now but adrenaline does crazy shite to your thought process.

I going to have to start feeling bad for Fox pretty soon. I've never seen a coach so completely incompetent at all aspects of his job (win NFL games). Can't they just put him out of his misery?

Well it's at least one part on him. I'll agree with that.
Two veteran player failed to do their jobs on that play. If Wright had made even a poor attempt at controlling the man he was to block Cunningham scores untouched. The second is on Cunningham for not securing the ball. He lost control with both hands before it hit the pylon. That was dumb and how long have those two been playing football?
I'm not sure why we need veteran coaches and veteran players when they all execute as poorly as they do.
This team loses because it makes far too many mistakes for a team with no margin for error. That's poor discipline and that stems from poor coaching. Both need to change starting with ushering the whole staff out the door. All of them. Time to rinse the taste of these guys out of our mouths and start over.
I'm sorry but NFL officiating and the replay system gets more fucked up with each passing year. Half the time whatever explanation they give doesn't jive with the video replays anyway. So do they have their own eye in the sky or just their own rule book with multiple choice excuses to use for making the calls they do. It's really getting frustrating to watch games be decided by officials.
This is it for me. I'm not gonna watch another game. I could spend my time doing better things than that. It's getting so the offseason is more interesting than the season itself.
