No he's a better run blocker but as a pass blocker I'm not so sure. Webb actually could pass block when he set his mind to it but he wasn't smart and he was too much of a goof ball and lazy. He could have been very good if he'd have wanted to be but he was more content to do just enough to keep a job and collect a paycheck. Hell, he's still playing for Seattle so this is his 7th year in the league. He's made millions by being big and just good enough to keep.
I wasn't going to go there (J'Marcus Webb comparison) but I was sure thinking about it. Webb has more athleticism. I watched him play for Seattle in the pre-season and he looked decent. Not great, but decent. He was playing RT that game. He played RG last week for Seattle and had a few rough plays for sure. I think he's a better tackle than guard, but he's versatile enough that Seattle can play him about anywhere. He's a huge man with good athleticism. I don't think he'll ever be a great player, but I'd rather have him right now at RT than Massie.
I guess that makes Pete Carroll and his OC much better than Lovie and Tice huh?

I think Webb had challenges to overcome when we drafted him. He came from a Division-II school, and had only been there 1 year. Before that he was at Navarro Junior College. He was on the Texas roster as a freshman, but he had academic problems and left. All-in-all, he wasn't much more than a high school kid, football-wise, in his development when we took him in the 7th round. Of course Bears fans have zero patience with our players, even 7th round picks like Webb. The fan base got down on him pretty quick. This kid had basically missed 4 years of college development at a quality school. He was going to need years to develop, and he did. Seattle benefitted in the end by signing him after that development. Webb is still only 28 years old (just turned 28).
Webb really didn't seem to have the competitive nature for NFL football... or any level football for that matter. He was just a big good-natured kid at heart who seemed to be too nice to ever be a hard-nosed offensive lineman. The guy did a lot of good things off the field for a lot of people, volunteering. He was just a humble guy who seemed to love everyone. I used to follow him on Twitter. He seemed like a child in a huge/powerful body.
He also didn't seem to have a great football I.Q. He was slow to develop. He was inconsistent also. He would have a great game against a great defender one week, and then perform poorly against a lessor opponent the next week.
But as far as his raw physical attributes he was the full package. Massie on the other hand looks like he is slow to me. Slow reaction. Slow feet. I don't know if you can fix that in Massie. Webb isn't a great player by any means. But he has matured and improved a bit. He'd be one heck of a solid swing-tackle to pull off the bench when needed for depth. And Seattle has played him at tackle, but when their RG went down to injury, they made Webb the starting guard. That's a pretty valuable bench player who can play 4 of the 5 OL positions.

I can certainly agree with all of what you said about Webb but on the other hand you don't take a kid like him and try to make him your franchise QBs blind side protector when he's as ill equipt for the job both professionally and intellectually as Webb was. Like the "Hester Package" he was just one more piece of Mike Tice bullshit in an entire swimming pool full of them. Tice's huge ego was always writing checks about his big plans for players and all of them bounced as I recall.
Yeah, at this point in time Webb probably is better than Massie as a pass blocker but then you can't fix stupid anymore than you can fix slow. JWebb is not one of the more intelligent players we've ever drafted and Massie will never have quick feet. It's a physical limitation he really can't do much about. Now if we could fuse Leno's feet, his quickness, and arm length with Massie's size and brute strength we might have an all world LT but that can't happen either so we'll just have to adjust.
