+1 I'm thankful we had a playoff caliber team to play this first game. This was a "test" of where the team is at right now at the beginning of the 2nd season under Pace/Fox. Beginning. The team has so many youngsters and new faces that it is reasonable to expect improvement game-by-game this season. Anyway, this first test revealed a lot of things to work on, but, it also revealed the fact that this is a team with some good raw talent. Obviously, there is a ton of work for the coaches and players to do over the next 15 games (and practices). But unlike years past, I do see some talent on this roster. Young talent on the way up.
I think it will be a LOT of fun watching these youngsters learn their craft and reach their ceilings, as Chicago Bears. I'm pumped
We'll see, but I don't think the Texans are a playoff caliber team. They are, however, a playoff caliber defense.
BiH, did you watch the rest of that division yesterday? The Colts, outside of Luck, are awful. The Jags and Titans still have a ways to go. Houston should easily win that division again IMHO. With that D and Lamar Miller running the ball, all they need is for Os to be decent to get to 10+ wins.
I agree, JABF. I thought the D overall did a pretty darn respectable job. They gave up only 2 TDs on the road and 1 of those was an indefensible superb play (perfect pass and great catch by an elite WR). The run D looked a little shaky in the first half but shut down Lamar Miller completely in the 2nd. I was particularly surprised in a good way by the secondary which we all think is thin and was further missing Fuller. They played well--I thought we were gonna get torched by Hopkins--and young players like Glenn, HJQ, Callahan, and Amos look promising going forward.
lets remember that Houston is one of the better teams we will face this year, with one of the best defenses we will see, and certainly the best pass rush.
As as much as it sucks to lose (and that WAS A WINNABLE GAME before two dumb miscues on O pissed away big opportunities) losing on the road to a playoff team from the AFC is about the least damaging loss you can have.
unfortunately, the upbeat feeling I have about the D doesn't extend to the O. Langford and White in particular need to produce more and the pass pro meltdown in the 2nd half was terrible.

We have a lot of young building blocks on D. I was expecting the front 7 to be good but the secondary to be a shit show, esp with Fuller out. They weren't. In fact, I thought they played really well. The D kept us in the game until nearly the end with the O going 3 & out most of the 2nd half (think we only had 2 1st downs until garbage time).
The O OTOH is behind and needs to pick it up. I think the OL will be fine once WH settles in but Langford has to do better than 3.5ypc and White needs to step up his game big time.
If they could Play up to that 1st half constantly and the whole game, we'd be in good shape.
+1,000 I was thinking the EXACT same thing this morning on the way to work. I am encouraged about this team. Lots of stuff to work on. Lots of stuff to fix. But you can see the raw talent (overall) is better than last year.
Agreed, JABF. There were a lot of rookie mistakes, things that can be corrected. It's obvious we have much more talent now than lat year. I'm looking forward to next year when these rookies have some experience and we ca get a new crop of talent. That's when the real fun is going to start.
Whitehair's bad snap - fixable. White's route running - fixable (hopefully, assuming he has the football IQ for it) Massie/Leno - if not fixable, replaceable next year. The secondary I thought played very well. Certainly much better than I expected. A lot of hope here too.

Quite honestly, no I did not. Had to stop what I was doing to get the Bears game in. Don't have the time (or desire) to watch anyone else. But I guess my distinction is a playoff caliber team, the operative word is caliber and means worthy. Because other teams are worse and they stand a good chance of being in the playoffs does not make them a playoff caliber team --- to me anyways. They did not look dominant other than defense to my eyes.

Fuller may actually have a difficult time reclaiming his starting spot over Glenn once he can play again. I like the way that kid plays man coverage and his aggressiveness. There were a lot of good things said about him in college one of which is he blew it by coming out too early. One more year at CFU and another 10-15 lbs on him and he may have been a fairly high draft pick.
If Glenn and Hall can really step up I'd love to see Fangio and Donatell finally give in and move Fuller to FS where he can play facing the QB. With is range and his anticipation I think he could be that back end ball hawk they want. Hall seems to be able to get away with playing with his back to the ball because of those tentacles he calls arms but Fuller can't do it period.
As for the offense I still don't get what Langford has done to earn a spot as the feature RB. Based purely on their preseason and my own gut instinct I'd start using Howard as my lead back, Langford as a change of pace and 3rd down guy, and Carey as a short yardage and utility back. One the one carry he did have they tripped him up at the LOS but he kept his knees off the ground and dove forward for a 4 yard gain. That kid never loses yardage when he carries the ball. Maybe next time we have a 4th and inches we should give it to him.

Leno can pass block well enough he just got overwhelmed by a down after down onslaught and Mercilus and Clowney are two of the better pass rushers he'll see this year. Houston just kept rotating fresh rushers at him and finally wore him down a bit.
Massie's feet aren't fixable and he's a lumbering RT who can't handle speed off the edge. Good run blocker/bad pass blocker. They're gonna need to either help him with a TE or a RB to chip on his guy almost all year long. I'm a little upset Pace spent $6 mil guaranteed on this guy. Even his buddy Kyle chewed his ass out on the bench after one three and out.

I'm gonna go ahead and predict that the Houston D will finish year the highest ranked of any team we face this year. As for their O, Hopkins in a beast, Fuller looks like he has some game for a rookie (wish I could say the same about a White but I can't at this point), and Lamar Miller is a solid RB. I don't think Osweiler is anything all that special at QB and they definitely overpaid for him but all he has to be is decent for them to win a lot of games. Remember they get 6 games against pretty weak competition in division.

Man, I've been calling for that for a year now.
Howard is a guy I was really hoping we would draft so yeah I'd like to see him get some carries. Carey as well. Langford reminds me of the least desirable of Forte (not great after contact or short yardage) but without his pass receiving home run ability.
