There Was A Big Bears Silver Lining During Texans Loss

It was frustrating watching the Chicago Bears in the second half of their 23-14 loss to Houston, but hardly what one would call surprising. The Houston Texans are a playoff football team who had strengths that directly countered every Bears weakness that has been referenced for the past month. They had a fierce defensive front seven against shuffled and unfamiliar offensive line. They had fast receivers against a young and thin secondary.
Yet they still hung around and held the lead into the fourth quarter before some bad mistakes doomed them. This is unquestionably one of the most difficult opponents the Bears will face on their schedule in 2016 and this is not the team they will be at the end of the season. It also doesn’t mean everything went wrong for Chicago in this game either. A number of positive notes could be taken away from the action.
One in particular should encourage them above all else. The first flash of Leonard Floyd as a pass rusher.
All told it was a pretty solid day for Floyd and other defensive rookies like Deiondre Hall and Jonathan Bullard. Floyd finished with a half sack, another pressure and six tackles. Hall had good coverage most of the afternoon along with three tackles and a pass deflection. Bullard wasn’t used too much but found a way to log a pressure on Brock Osweiler anyway.
On that sack Floyd looked like a pro pass rusher. He was initially engaged, used his hands to free himself from the block and then his speed and closing burst became plainly evident as Osweiler had no chance. It was the exact reason the Chicago Bears traded up to get him. Floyd provides a dimension the team didn’t have last year.
There will still be hiccups in the weeks to come, but the fact that he started the game says the coaches have the utmost confidence in where he’s at and where he’s going. Whenever Pernell McPhee gets back, the Bears defense will then start to take on the shape they envisioned months ago.
