Bears make several roster moves after signing former Packer Josh Sitton Sep 7, 2014; Tampa, FL, USA; By: Bryan Perez | 1 hour ago
When the Bears signed All-Pro guard Josh Sitton yesterday, it was assumed his addition would result in the termination of an interior lineman currently on the roster. We speculated that Amini Silatolu was the most likely candidate to get the axe. Chicago seemed to agree, releasing the former Carolina Panther today.
What’s most interesting about today’s transactions is the change the team made at long snapper. Aaron Brewer, a player the Bears added this offseason in free agency, made the 53-man roster out of training camp only to be released in favor of his camp competitor Patrick Scales.
Maybe the coaching staff had second thoughts.
Matt Barkley’s addition to the practice squad is one worth noting, too. He hasn’t lit the NFL on fire since entering the league as a fourth-round pick of the Eagles in 2013, but he could mature into a serviceable backup at some point with the Bears. At worst, he and Connor Shaw will be a fun quarterback competition to watch in next year’s training camp.
So the answer to the question about who gets cut to make room for Sitton the answer is Silatolu.
Maybe the more bizarre deal was releasing LS Aaron Brewer and re-signing LS Patrick Scales who they just cut on Saturday. Go figure.
Unless you're on the dabear's board, the relevance of Brewer's roster spot is questionable. I never saw anything special out of him and while I don't dismiss the value of the long snapper - it's actually a vital position - if Fox and Rodgers (cringe) believe he's the hands that will make Barth successful, so be it.
Silatolu didn't show much in the pre-season and that move makes sense. We have Whitehair/Larsen to play the swing guard role and in the event of further injuries there are a few options out there (saw Ducasse got cut, for example).

Does the change on LS have any relationship to the release of Gould? Just speculating that maybe Gould preferred Brewer, or the staff thought Brewer was better for Gould, or something like that

What seems bizarre about the LS deal is that Brewer was the guy Rodgers wanted to bring in from Denver to be the Bears LS so from the get go you would think he had the inside track at making the roster and apparently he did only to have them make a switch after the fact right after releasing Gould. Is it possible the two moves were interrelated?
I believe that LS position is very critical but we were spoiled for so long having one of the best ever in Pat Mannelly I think we simply went to sleep on the position in general since it was never up for grabs to begin with. Since Mannelly retired it's been nothing but a revolving door of guys most not even lasting out an entire season. How much that had to do with Gould's struggles I can't say either but they did begin right after Mannelly retired.
Robbie never spoke out about it but Pat O'Donnell has and made a point about how critical the velocity and timing of the snap are to him as a punter. That said I'd think a PK would feel much the same since his timing is also dependent on it. So it is a very vital position but one that's much more difficult for us to determine whose doing it well and whose not unless there are some truly bad snaps.
With Sitton in the fold now to start and a young OL to develop in Whitehair Silatolu was pretty much a victim of the numbers game. With as little time as he had to show what he could do in camp he was hanging on by a thread anyway and it was his failure to help Holmes handle the KC NT that led to Shaw's sacking and injury. That had to loom big on the game tapes.
Cornelius Edison, Demontre Hurst added to Bears practice squad; one spot remains
Aug 13, 2015; Chicago, IL, USA; By: Lorin Cox | 1 hour ago
The Chicago Bears added two more players to their practice squad Monday, filling up nine of the 10 spots they are officially allowed. The team announced center Cornelius Edison and cornerback Demontre Hurst are both being added after the team released the two young players Sunday.
Edison started the third and fourth preseason games at center for the Bears, pushing veteran Ted Larsen back to guard, but after the team claimed Eric Kush on waivers and signed Josh Sitton in free agency, Edison was the odd-man out on the interior.
After showing a lot to like in the preseason, Edison was thought to be potentially earning the starting job for the regular season, but the makeup of this offensive line changed quickly over the weekend, and he found himself headed to the practice squad.
Hurst wound up in a similar situation, as the Bears claimed undrafted rookie free agent Cre’Von LeBlanc on waivers from the New England Patriots, and his practice squad eligibility made him a prime candidate to be cut and stashed.
The Bears also tried to add Houston Texans running back Akeem Hunt to the practice squad, according to the Houston Chronicle, but he instead chose to return to his team, rather than joining their Week 1 opponent.
Ryan Pace still has one practice squad spot to fill, and it would seem likely that he could be looking at a defensive lineman to add, given that it is the only positional group not found on the squad already.

SWAMP MONSTER!!!!!!!
I truly don't understand why he is not already there. I thought the dude showed well in PS games.

That was my immediate thought as well Chuck.
I think the soulman spelled it out pretty well above. The way things played out for the LS position over the off season and pre-season is truly peculiar to me. It has to be player preference given the Gould departure. I see no other rational rationale.

Well he hasn't signed with anyone else yet that I've noticed. They may have offered the PS to him but he may also be trying to catch on with another team as a backup rather than spend another season on the Bears PS as a #3 NT. Since we have enough depth at DE I'm actually surprise they didn't keep him over Sutton. Sutton offers a little more versatility but Williams is more of a true NT.
