..." the harder the conflict , the more glorious the triumph ; what we attain too cheap , we esteem too lightly ; it is dearness only that gives any thing it's value " - Thomas Paine
- and what we hold dear are W's ( though I doubt the acquisition of a guard will make them all that much easier to come by , so I wouldn't get too excited - more hopeful yes , excited ? not yet )
That was short lived. I'll go back to not being excited.
Well I was seeing too many diamond -cutters around here when they should only be blue-veiners ... sorry but somebody has to put a governor on the engine ( lest the disappointment become too great ) .
The Chicago Bears are set to sign kicker Connor Barth after releasing veteran Robbie Gould on Sunday, a source told Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Barth lost a kicking battle to Kai Forbath in New Orleans Saints training camp and most recently played 12 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, converting 82.1 percent of field goals - including 3-of-5 from 50-plus yards.
Gould, the Bears longest-tenured player heading into the season, spent 11 seasons in Chicago and has converted 85.4 percent of field goals during his career.
His release will save $3 million against the cap in 2016, according to Spotrac, after reports emerged that the 34-year-old struggled in recent practices.
TBH, I'd though for sure Pace would **** this up and find a way to look a gift horse (Sitton's unexpected availability) in the mouth. Glad to be wrong.
We now have the NFL's best guard duo with Larsen or Whitehair manning center (TL is a far better C than G IMO). There's depth on the interior once again. Keep in mind that Sitton has played some RT in the past so he's a backup option there if need be as well.
This is a good move by Pace that makes up for his Slauson/Ramirez screwup which admittedly wasn't entirely his fault.
In one fell lucky swoop, he made the Bears stronger while the Packers got weaker. Anything that narrows that gap is a good thing.
Yea now all the Bears need is better RB and TE and healthy WR and of course a Defensive back field would help.

The Packers aren't perfect in every position group either. Keep in mind that they're hoping Lacy doesn't re-pork out or start fumbling again. And that Jared Cook regains his old form. And that Jordy isn't gimpy at 31 coming off an ACL tear. And that Adams finds his hands. And that their interior OL holds up without Sitton.
They are still the better team on paper no doubt but they aren't without question marks of their own.
I'd like to think that will be Pace's starting point. I'm not aware of any reported back injury but I do know he played through a foot injury a couple of years ago. Despite that he hasn't missed any starts and although he's played the left side most of his career he's also moved around when needed.
Josh Sitton’s career statistics Games Fumbles Year G GS FF FR 2008 11 2 2009 16 16 0 1 2010 16 16 2011 14 14 2012* 16 16 2013 16 16 2014* 16 16 2015* 16 16 Career 121 112 0 1
He's only missed two starts since 2009. That's some pretty good toughness and consistency I'd say.
Right now the Porker fans seem to be as upset with this move as some Bears fans have been with our release of Matt Slauson. I'm not sure Sitton is the perfect prospect for a zone run blocking scheme either but the guy is a virtual wall as a pass blocker so in any event I don't think we can ignore any opportunities to sign him. His knowledge of the GB offense is an X factor in the whole deal too.
I also hope Pace can get a deal done with him before he even leaves to NOLA. I think we have more to offer him now and in the near future than virtually anyone else. If he can play OC or this other FA we just picked up can maybe we set Larsen sailing.
Pace wouldn't have invited Sitton in for a meeting if he wasn't serious about signing him. This guy's a vet in the league and the Bears, more than 29 other teams, know Sitton's strengths and weaknesses.
One other note: Green Bay's bread and butter is zone blocking. They've been running a zone blocking scheme for quite sometime now so Sitton has experience there. Here's a decent article about it: Click Here
Perfect. If he's been playing in an Alex Gibbs style zone scheme then that's the basis for the Bears scheme as well so the fit is as good as it gets. Plus we got him for the 3 years and $10 mil guarantees I hoped we'd be able to. He'll need to stay at the top of his game to earn the rest and that's good with me. I consider this to be a pretty team friendly deal.
I figured once Pace got him in to talk they wouldn't let him walk without a deal. Not when we can offer him a staring spot and it takes some stress off Whitehair if they play Sitton at LG.
This may be a parallel situation to Long. A probowl player at G that will only be ok at another position. Has anyone seen him play C?
I found this tweet by Bran Biggs to be interesting:

Obviously, would need a 3rd move if they were to sign former #Packers G Josh Sitton. If Sitton came on board, my guess is Whitehair to C.
I don't see Whitehair as a good option at center. I'd much rather Whitehair sat the bench with Larsen taking center reps and Sitton taking reps at LG. Remember, Long has a labral tear and might need to take some time off during the reg season. In that event, Sitton is the perfect signing. He can fill in at LG and provide stability in the event ANY of the interior OL players take time off due to injury.
Well now that we have Sitton we once again have the luxury of some decisions about how to use him and some of the other OL. If they decide to play him at LG then I assume Whitehair will go back to taking some snaps at OC again in practice but for now I expect they'll start Larsen and allow Whitehair to find his level of comfort there.
Maybe a bigger question is do they still keep Silatolu whose younger and has upside once he's fully recovered from his injury. Whitehair could also take some snaps at LT so in effect he's being used as a utility OL for now. The more versatile he becomes the more value he has now and in the future even after Grasu returns.
I don't think it's worth looking at next year quite yet. All I know is by virtue of signing Sitton our starting talent and depth on the interior of the OL just made a quantum leap. If Silatolu recovers and can play at a high level again the moves we made with those two FAs and the drafting of Whitehair go a long way toward stabilizing the OL and could create even more options next year.
So this is where I am looking to see some coaching magic. I want to see how they reshuffle the line. There is no doubt that Sitton is a good guard. The question is.... is Long hurt and so do they just make the easy decision to put him at Longs position? If not, that's where it gets interesting. We have good Guards right now. So unless Long is hurt, you don't throw 10M at someone just to have a third good G. They plan on moving the line around to cover C. Question is... do we really have a good C in the bunch. In other words, 10M on a C right now would have been great for a probowl C. Instead we got a Probowl G. How do we strengthen the line by making the right decisions? What will the line look like? Any guesses? The wild card is Long. Is he going to play or not?
Fox has said all along that Long will play and had he been allowed to speak for himself I'm sure he would say the same. He's not the kind of guy whose gonna sit unless they make him sit and if they can fit him with a sling and he can deal with some pain he'll play. That's his mentality.
My guess is that Sitton goes to LG and Whitehair keeps taking snaps at LG and OC but Larsen will start for now. How this effects LA Kush (Couldn't resist giving him that nickname) I don't know. It's obvious Pace and Fox are pulling out all the stops as far as trying to upgrade the OL so all we can do is sit back now and see how they play it.
They aren't paying Sitton $10 mil guaranteed to be a backup to anyone so he's gonna start somewhere soon and the logical place would be LG. Larsen looks like he can handle OC for now but later in the season Whitehair may be ready to take over. The nice thing is that we now have a more experienced OL and the luxury of working Whitehair at multiple positions in practice getting him acclimated to all of them.
It's a good question . Do they make Long have surgery now ? do they make Whitehair a backup ? can Sitton play C ? will they move Sitton to RT if Massie falters ( I've heard rumblings he's not "all that" ) ? We'll know by next week . Anyway you slice it tho this should make the line better .
It's a strained or torn labrum and normally it will heal without surgery. Surgery is usually a last option if it won't heal over time on it's own and my guess is that would probably come after the season if needed.
