The Bears have added some nice pieces in the first two Pace drafts. I expect he will add more in this one. Primarily the future of the Bears under Pace will depend upon how well he drafts. I like what I see so far from his drafts. Obviously, the roster has more needs than the draft can immediately fill. You're right, Massie was useless at the beginning of the season, but he's gotten a lot better, IMHO. It will remain to be seen how good or bad the Cooper signing will play out, but he's a 2017 alternate Pro Bowl player, so he can't be too bad, right? He just turned 27 so he's not old. After this season his guaranteed money is only $2mil. I don't know. I have no problem with that.
I think Pace is doing what he said he'd do in FA. He wants to go into this draft being able to draft the best players available and not have to reach for a need. I think he's doing a very good job using FA that way, so he can go BPA in this draft, including at QB. It's the draft that will determine our future. Not FA. That's my cut on it anyway, FWIW.
I'm not saying that PFF is the end all either or that a figure of $1 mil per year isn't far too low but is the our offer way too high? I believe these are reasonable questions regarding our approach to FA. Every rumor any of could read had us in on Gilmore big time and I don't think that was inaccurate. But after failing to land a top CB last offseason due to offering too little don't you think Pace should have realized he needed to up his offers in order to compete?
It leaves me wondering if most of this isn't just window dressing. Teddy Bears claims we're hitting FA "Bigly", Pace shoots out offers that can't possibly be accepted, then they both say we tried but didn't get them so what could we do? But we did get this guy and that guy instead and look at how happy they are to be here. "Coop" made $675k last season and he'll make $5 mil this year with another $3 mil guaranteed next year whether he with us or not.
I'd be pretty fookin' happy if I just got a 1200% raise too. Beers for all of ya'.
I realize the draft is the only long term successful way to build most of your team but it's also impractical to rely only on that. At most we may get one to three starters out of any draft and how many will ever become impact players? In fact will our first one under Pace ever even see the field and if he does will he know where to be and when after the ball is thrown? Even Goldman and Floyd have had their injury issues and along with Whitehair those have been the best of our picks early picks who need to start.
So FA and/or trades are still a very important cog in restocking a team and keeping it restocked to win consistently. If you need a vet or two to start and plug a hole that's where we have to get them. It's not that we aren't signing UFAs it's the level of players we sign in some cases that's hurting us. Freeman and Hicks have been great finds and Sitton was a gift but others not so much. Maybe they were accustomed to having better talent around them then they got here and flopped like Rolle or they have injury issues which is why their former teams let them go. Ring up Royal and McPhee on that one.
Overall we are not doing well in this rebuilding process are we? I mean it's tough to say we are when our HC takes us from 6-10 in his honeymoon year to 3-13 in his; well she can't cook for shit, leaves the bathroom a total mess, forgets to write down my phone messages, and she sucks in bed (figuratively speaking, LOL) year. Are the top guys ignoring us due to this or Fox himself as HC? Or, have Teddy Bears and GMcC only left Pace enough cash to cover small pizzas and soft drinks for his team? Not enough to pay for nice dinners and a few beers with the boys? I think it's a bit of both.
Look, I'm not gonna root for these guys to fail but I'm not gonna jump up and down over a letter I could have written either, or maybe had my agent write now that I just made him a pile of money with a $16 mil deal. What did we expect, one that said ah shit I was really hopin' it was NE or GB when my agent called and said you've got a deal? So is he worth $8 mil? Is Glennon worth $19 mil? And what ever the rest comes to. I think it's around $51 mil total.
I guess we're gonna find out but this is the reason I keep asking what's changed? For three offseasons for the most part we have signed either mid to lower tier UFAs or mid to late 20s early 30s vets with previous injury histories and it seems to be biting us in the ass big time.
I dunno. With Fox hopefully on his way out after 2017 maybe this is the correct way to play it until we do that next reset. Maybe Pace is actually shiftier than I think he may be and he's a step ahead of Fox here. The trouble is there is so much wrong with this team from top to bottom it's like a huge crap stew that needs a whole lot more beef and a whole less crap and some keep wondering what's wrong and thinking what should I add to make it taste better?.........Duh.
