My overall point is to go ALL IN on getting Pace's "guy" and not clutch-pearls at the cost. It matters little in the long run if the guy you get pans out.
I totally agree. I think the paralysis is caused by how much it matters in the long run when you go all in and get the wrong guy (as we did Cutler under Emery). Then it hurts for years. I am to the point that I don't care. It will suck if we don't do anything and it will suck if we get the wrong guy. One way we have a chance, other way we don't. If the team motto has to be 'let it suck", then let it suck, but let's go for the guy who we think is the answer. We can do it again next year if we aren't right. And if we are wrong two years in a row, then Pace is not the right guy either. First step is to get the right guys. After that it becomes easy. It really does.
I agree with that too. If we draft a guy and miss, well I figure we at least are (finally) taking the QB position seriously and trying to draft a guy. If you whiff, then reload and try it again until you get a solid QB here. Putting your head in the sand and NOT even trying to seriously draft a guy is what makes me angry. You can't get a guy if you don't even try. Pace needs to get off his ass and at least try to fix this thing.
Well my cannon of cold hard facts is now empty and in need of cooling off and realoding. Call me up after FA and we'll see what fingers and toes that have bought that way can help us to replace those we're cutting off. That may give us some idea of how the draft may play out but I wouldn't guarantee it.
Most years we go into a draft with a priority or maybe two but to me it looks like we're about to have so many we'd need 10 picks in the first three rounds to fill them all. I can see how they've been trying the old addition by subtraction method to improve but between you and me and the fence post I don't see it working very well.
Sayonara.
We all want to see the team get better. Hopefully it will get better. Take care, Soul.

Well, you can argue that Angelo "got the wrong guy" with Cutler in the first place and Emery just compounded that by extending him. There's plenty to blame JA for but I don't fault him from the Cutler trade. He took a shot at a guy that at the time was a young, pro-bowl QB when we definitely needed one and it didn't work out. Some of that is on the organization for not giving him the surrounding cast he needed and some of that is on Jay too for not stepping up his game consistently as his talent level allowed. Water under the bridge at this point of course.
There's no question that Emery and Pace should have drafted a QB within the first 3 rounds at some point(s) in the 5 chances they had collectively. It was clear that Cutler wasn't (yet anyway) a world-beater as a QB by even the time Emery arrived so they should have taken a shot or two. I blame them both for NOT TAKING SHOTS then I do any GM who doesn't even bother to try. Now, Pace needs TWO QBs in the mix when he should have needed only one.

no, I liked the JA Cutler trade. He was the best guy available. You can argue that he should have looked deeper into Cutlers abilities beyond the physical traits, but those are hard to determine and with a hot commodity like Cutler, you have other teams waiting to pull the trigger if you don't. The league did not know Cutler as they do today. It was a sound move IMO.
There is no defense for Emery. By that point, we knew exactly what we had. To make him the highest paid person in the league and hurt us for years to come. That was one of the worst moves I have seen any GM make. And of course, he happened to be the Bears GM. What are the odds Phil?

It seems like the team has had a large assortment if problems spanning years. LOL, I thought Angelo and Lovie were bad. I had no clue it could get worse here after they were sent packing. Now we are down to a 3-win team. Who knew?
The Cutler trade was something that thrilled me at the time. I think most Bears fans (like me) were thinking it was a great move. I am guilty of hindsight here, when I say I wish we had never traded for Cutler. He certainly wasn't the worst of our problems here in Chicago. Anyway, hopefully Pace is the guy who can rebuild the roster with talent. He seems promising anyway. If Fox isn't the answer I'll bet He'll be fired and Pace can try again. One can hope anyway :-)
On a positive note, I do get pretty exited about us drafting one of these QBs this year. I hope we do try to land one of these guys in the draft.
Listen I think we all liked the Cutler trade at the time, but even then I said it was to rich, and while he was a step up from KO, he wasn't a huge step up; that ended up being true. Cutler is a average at best starter, his #'s in Den were highly inflated by attempts, and that can be said b/c the other qb's w/#'s similar to him had much fewer attempts. KO was a boarderline starter; and couldn't have ever put up #'s like Cutler. Cutler is/was better, just not worth 2 1sts and KO better.
I aggree w/MP, the real fail was Emery/Pace not taking a qb in the 5 drafts they had in the first 3 rounds. There were qb's they could have taken that had potential. The conspiracy theorist in me is that they weren't allowed by upper management b/c HH wanted to exhaust all options w/Cutler and hope he set some records so that their record holder wasn't from the 60's anymore. I have no proof of that, but it sure felt that way b/c both GM's talked about the importance of drafting qb's early and often, and never have.
I just posted a nice article in the general NFL forum on the Browns QB situation and how they MUST find a QB this year to move forward. Pretty much a mirror of the Bears situation. But they have 11 picks, many of them high picks and over $100 in CAP.
They SHOULD get the best QB in the market if they do their job. THey have the resources to either buy or draft the best guy. IF they do their job (always questionable with the Browns -- but I do respect Hue) the top guy will be gone and the 49ers and us will be looking at the rest of the class. I just hope we don't just settle for another mid round QB. It would be tough to be looking up at the Browns.
If the Browns go after and get JG, then they won't be drafting a QB with their first pick. Probably Garrett is gone.
That would leave us one of the top two draft QBs. Cousins has said the only trade he would take is to the 49ers because of Shanahan. I don't think they can pull that off, but if that happens, then the 9ers don't draft a QB either and we have our choice of any QB. I just hope we don't play smart and say that the QB we want should be available in the 2nd so we take someone else and then our guy is gone. Then we can hear another "draft didn't go our way" speech. If we get first shot at a QB, take they guy you think will lead you to a SB and be done with it. He'll take some flack for sure if it is not one of the consensus top QBs, but if he's right in the end it won't matter.

Or... Pats decide not to trade JimmyG, Redskins keep Cousins, Browns & 49ers select Watson & Kizer because they need a QB badly and we end up with either Trub or Garrett.
Not exactly my favorite scenario but it's possible.
