Don't expect injury to Vikings' Teddy Bridgewater to benefit Bears
Though tempting in Chicago, resist the urge to write off the Vikings after the season-ending knee injury to Teddy Bridgewater 12 days before their opener.
The Vikings aren't going anywhere, except probably back to the playoffs as a wild-card team. Losing Bridgewater perhaps makes it unlikely the Vikings can surpass the Packers in the NFC North but the gap between them and the Bears remains large enough to fit one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes. Shaun Hill replacing Bridgewater at quarterback gives the Bears reason to believe they can beat the Vikings on the scoreboard in one of the two games they play — but not in the standings over the course of the season.
The best the Bears realistically can hope for remains third place in the NFC North, and even that sounds optimistic based on what they have shown heading into Thursday's exhibition finale in Cleveland against the Browns. If you saw a .500 team watching the Bears in August, you might want to consult your optometrist.
I'll tell you what I thought when I first read this on line and that is that I thought the story was crass and presumptuous. It makes it sound like most Bear fans thought "Yea, great injury, so now we have a chance". I'm sure there are those that thought that, but do you write a story about it as though that despicable train of thought is the norm?
I'm thinking maybe we should play the games before we decide who wins.
I'm thinking teams are gonna go all out to contain AP and dare Shaun Hill to beat them with his arm. It's rare for a backup QB forced into action right at week 1 to lead a team through 16 games to the playoffs. Cassel did it with the Pats a decade ago but I can't think of any other off the top of my head. Most of the time a backup has to play most of all of the RS the results aren't too pretty. See the Romo-less Cowboys of last year who went from 12-4 to 4-12 as an example.
Minnesota is definitely a solid team but their chance of reaching the postseason is well under 50% now in my opinion.
I think it was either written by someone at ESPN or someone who writes for the Minneapolis Star who woke up deciding to be somewhat of a dikhead today. Like 4d, I think whoever is being a little presumptuous to think Bears fans are counting our playoff chickens just because of the injury to Bridgewater.
As it stands it looks like neither team may make the playoffs dues to numerous injuries but things can often look dismal in the preseason. I think I'll wait for some games to be played before I make any predictions on how things might look in December.
I liked how Lovie Smith split the season into 4 sub-seasons. I use that too. After the first 4-games we should have enough information to have a pretty good idea of what we'll have this season. That doesn't mean the team won't improve throughout the season. It should improve steadily from game to game all season long with all of the youngsters and new people on the team. But 4 games in, we should have a pretty good handle on our ceiling for this year.
And I am NOT talking about wins/losses the first quarter of the season. I'm talking about how the team plays. I'm hoping that even if we have losses, the team looks competitive. Like they have a clue. That is what I am looking for.
Shaun Hill won games when he was throwing to Calvin Johnson in Detroit. That was also 5 years ago. He's not going to suddenly warp into Josh McCown 2.0. Most likely the Vikings aren't going to the playoffs this year. Bad luck happens. That article was stupid.

That is how I'm going to judge this season. I know the Bears will not make the playoffs. All I ask from the Bears is that they are competitive. Next season I expect playoffs..

you are right, at this point its not likely that we will see a playoff spot, but as you said there is a lot of place of improvement, we are a very young team, and none of our core guys is old (Cutler being the oldest)
