My guess is we will stick with the current format until the next CBA. Reworking the current PS/RS schedule has too many ramifications as to owner revenue and player compensation.
We just need to get to the regular season.... Way too many preseason games..... This from Bears camp: Jeff Dickerson ✔ @dickersonespn Bears safety Eddie Jackson says the starters are “all-in” preparing for Green Bay. There have been no illusions this week about what the priority is for the first-team.
I think that's becoming the consensus around the league. Seems like more and more coaches are ignoring the conventional wisdom by refusing to play key players.
PS needs to be cut down to 2 games
Yeah... Well as long as they are making money on them they won't change it.

I agree about the money, but it seems like these games are becoming less popular with fans, in addition to the coaches and players. The "real" money to be made is going to be adding 2 more regular season games and dropping 2 or more of the preseason games. I think that money issue will drive this.

I'm sure even 1 extra RS game would generate more revenue than 2 PS games. The NFL seems determined to extend its international reach (Europe, Canada, Mexico) so maybe that 17th game for each team is played at a neutral site.
All this stuff is gonna be on the table with the next CBA negotiation. The owner's are gonna push for more and the NFLPA is going to resist. Will be an interesting dynamic. But no matter what, something has to be done about the PS. Charging fans and STHs "full price" for pseudo-games that are increasingly becoming very low-budget affairs has to be addressed.

Players are REALLY against that idea. Too much wear and tear

I know. They are now. And I admit I could be dead wrong, but my gut feeling is that with the new CBA money will drive this thing for the players too. I'm not judging either side, but it seems like the money could eventually look good to both sides. Enough of it, and the players will be all in for an extra game or two, even with the wear and tear on their bodies.

It will be interesting to see if the CBA negotiations involve roster size and CAP limitations. Meaning adding 2 additional RS games and adding 4 or 5 players to to overall roster limit.

I know!!!! About an extra regular season game played but at a diamond with a bat and a ball. Imagine these big linemen trying to line drive a fastball.
