MP, the problem w/chasing past NE players is most teams aren't going to play the game NE does. Nagy uses his rb's very similar to how NE used Patterson. He restructured b/c he has NO cap space, and needs to sign a few more FA's, and sign draftees and have room to move after cut downs and during the season. 20-30 mil isn't a lot of cash; AND they need to extend players this year and next year. The thing about Skine/Patterson/Davis is they can all be gone next year; opening up more cap for more extensions and more signings.
like i've been saying; this is the downside of going big in FA, and getting a guy like Mac where you lose draft picks AND cap space.
I fully expected this to be a “slow” FA for the Bears. In fact, I wanted it that way and would have been happy to just re-sign those of our own we could and then move on. We could have gotten comp pick or two for next year depending on the details.
Figure Leming had coming into was FA was $18m in cap space (that’s after Sims and Acho cut and includes clawback on Glennon’s dead money). Ok, I throw in Goldie’s restructure which was minor and that puts us to over $20m.
Point is, that’s plenty of money for the minor things Pace had to do. Skrine, Cordarelle, and Davis prob cost $15m in cap. The draft class will cost very little this year (maybe couple million). So I’m just curious why Pace created $11m in more space by restructuring Mack at this point. Extending Whitehair isn’t going to happen until August so there’s no reason right now.
Im wondering if Pace was making room for a deal he was pursuing that fell through.
I saw somewhere we were going hard after Weddle. Maybe the extra cash was for him?

15mil out of lets say approx 31 mil, is 16 mil, rookies won't be a ton, but will cost some, they still need a couple more signings, lets say that takes you to 10-12 mil, you don't use all your cap, you need some for moves during the year and after camp cuts. There were no big moves to be had;Earl Thomas just got 11mil per year, bears couldn't have afforded that w/or w/out Patterson. AND they still need to extend Whitehair and maybe Jackson. what's left? Why not do it now and just get it over with? I'll wait to see what Callahan gets, b/c that will be the final piece that allows me to view the full picture.
EJax can’t be extended until next year so that’s not an issue. Whitehair will be an August decision.
$5m this year will cover Bears draft class plus a small emergency fund. I gotta see the final figures on the Skrine/Davis/Cord contracts but I can’t imagine they could total more than $15m in 2019 cap, probably less.
Just curious why Pace made the Mack move he did unless he planned to go after more. Since he seems to have little interest in stockpiling comp picks, I hope he can pick up an edge rusher somewhere (Lynch equivalent) because right now we have nothing behind our starters.

^^^ That would make sense. It just feels to me like Pace was tooling up for a signing that never materialized.

I don't they've gone into a season w/only 5mil in cap(maybe last year b/c of getting a shot at Mac late in the draft. I could be wrong, seems like they always about round 10-13mil.

Might have been, he got 2yr 10mil, if thats the case, I would think the Bears would have matched or offered more. Maybe he chose the Rams and the Bears weren't going to pay a premium for his services.

Typically more than $5m yes, but as you've pointed out, we aren't in "typical mode" anymore. The cap is going to be tighter because we FINALLY have players worth paying big bucks for. And the rookie class this year will cost peanuts by NFL standards. Even next year, we won't have a 1st round pick so the draft won't be a huge expense.
Its not uncommon for teams to be tight against the cap going into the season--there's several every year.
After Coleman's and Ingram's deal were signed today at both $5M a year, it's interesting to see Patterson get the same amount per year as they did. I'll be interested to see if the Bears roll forward with a Cohen-Davis-Patterson combo.

my guess they'll add a rookie since bit Davis and/or Patterson can be cut next year to create cap room.
whats really odd is that Coleman was just as cheap as cp so did they even look that way? imo sf got the best deal in FA so far with Coleman at 5 mil a year

Agree and I gotta wonder how Pace didn't get in on that. Considering Davis got about half that, why wouldn't you go get Coleman instead for just $2.5m/yr more?
Then just draft a late round RB to be the #4 guy and you're done
