We talk about Ryan Pace's FA record, but sometimes I think we forget about him re-signing our own players, instead of letting them walk away from us. How important is it for the Bears to re-sign Kyle Fuller?
To a degree it depends on his value vs pursuing a top UFA like Trumaine Johnson. I think the rest will depend on the new HC and DC.
Fuller and Amukamara are both set to become UFAs and Marcus Cooper who is signed looks like he may be gone. If he wasn't earning guaranteed money he should have been gone after he was caught "hot dogging" at the end of that blocked FG return and lost the ball. That and other disappointments show why he was a UFA to begin with. He has issues.
IMHO at least one of our starting CBs needs to be re-signed and if Pace opts not to take a hard swing at Trumaine Johnson then maybe he should keep both. We could do worse and we have done worse. Teams have chosen to throw more often at Fuller and for the most part he's stepped up and played well. A new coaching staff and a new deal may lift him even higher but Pace can't over pay just to keep him either.
It's well worth watching what Pace does here. He's gonna be going into an offseason where CB isn't one if his biggest problems provided he can keep both of his starters. Let's see which one gets signed first.
I think Pace may catch heat no matter how he handles this. If Fuller commands more money than he is worth, from another team, and Pace chooses to let him walk, then Pace will get heavy criticism by fans. On the other hand, if he pays too much to keep Fuller, then Pace will also be getting heavy criticism.
My gut feeling is that this is a league that often overpays for FA talent, and some team will offer him more money than he is worth. Not that he isn't a good player. He is a good player. But do you seriously overpay to keep him?

big offseason in the works. i am a Fuller fan since college and think he's finally able to play with his back to the QB like a pro. he's had ups and downs, but he's always been a willing tackler and nose for the ball. against Green he looked legendary, just need to see that performance over the last 3 games.
i don't expect he'll get much love from around the league thanks to his learning curve.
what is it to overpay? i think he's worth top 35% of CB salary if he signs a 4+ year deal. don't expect those longer deals to get done in this league unfortunately.
I hate making new holes so Pace would be wise to re-sign both Prince and Fuller, while releasing Cooper. I have little confidence in his ability to land Trumaine Johnson.
Pace’s track record is such, that if he lets one of the two above go, he will whiff on getting Johnson and end up signing some trash, lower-tier player who’s “better value” thereby creating a hole where there isn’t one now.

He’s “worth” what the overall market says what he’s worth, JABF. That might not be a number you think is right but it’s objective rather than subjective.

I knew someone would come back with that. In one sense it is right. I agree that his worth is anything a team is willing to pay him, even if it will be way more money than his true value. Mike Glennon comes to mind here. He was "worth" $18.5 million dollars guaranteed money. But is he truly "worth" that? No, of course not. It would be like Tampa, his former team out bidding us and paying him $20 mil to keep him after the 2016 season. They didn't.
Fuller isn't Glennon. But my only point is that he may get offered more money than it would be prudent to have Pace to counteroffer to keep him here. You understand what I am trying to say here... LOL, I'm trying to find the right word to describe this... help me out here :-)

No, you don't over pay to keep him but he's not a guy anyone will break their bank for either. I've read that much like AJ he wants to play elsewhere so sign Amukamara and pursue Trumaine Johnson instead. He's bigger and better at all of the things Fuller has always struggled with.
No one will criticize letting him go if he's adequately replaced. It's when that doesn't happen we all get unhappy.

I do not know that Fuller is a true #1 shutdown corner but he is definitely good and maybe better than a #2 CB. I have not seen he wants out of Chicago so was surprised to read that. Much as others have stated the market will dictate the price and he has had a good season. If top CB are in the 12 to 14M range I would guess he is in the 9M range. Have to see what the market dictates but I would like to see him return.
