When I've got a few moments of free time, I find myself scouring the draft boards and picking over NFL.com's prospect tracker. I've come to the conclusion that we have between 5-7 legit choices with that first pick. When you pick as high as the Bears do, your options just aren't as unpredictable, unless your GM is Phil Emery - thank God it's not. With the relative certainty of that first pick, the compelling question becomes - who do we target in rounds 2-4 where we have four picks.
I don't have inside knowledge of the team so my prospect rankings are based on stereotypes and public information regarding the kind of players the Bears look for. I have a few kids I've been reading up on a lot who I'm interested in - predicting Pace makes a play at. Here are some of my favorites. Care to share some of yours?
Defensive Line: Assuming we don't go out and grab Jonathan Allen or Solomon Thomas with our first pick, I REALLY like
Chris Wormley and his potential fit with the Bears. His profile highlights his work ethic and leadership on the field. Lance Zierlein
describes him as one "who brings leadership and high character into the locker room. Wormley's size and athleticism could appeal to teams that favor big, strong base ends who can set a physical edge and then bump inside as pass rushers." These characteristics fit with what Pace and Fox both have articulated as desirable qualities in their players. Wormley looks like a good fit assuming he reaches a worthy spectrum of selection.
Safety: "Undersized free safety with the heart of a linebacker. Baker plays with a competitive desire that leaps off the field when you watch him thanks to elite football character and above-average explosiveness" - granted, who the frick is Lance Zielein, but that type of description screams PICK ME. That's Budda Baker and if we don't go after Jamal Adams with our first round pick, there's a real possibility that Budda will fall into the top of the second (maybe even late second if we're willing to do some trading around). I love the comp. to the Hit Man Bob Sanders. What I don't love is who he was playing in front of. Sitting back as the centerfielder when your two starting corners are day 1-2 prospects raises questions about what you're going to do when you're not playing with the best in the league. Still, I'd take a gamble on the traits Baker is purportedly described as having. If Pace can't land him, then another safety I have my eye on is...
Justin Evans who Lance Zierlein touts as a "soft-spoken...[carrier of] a walloping stick." He's got the aggression, athleticism, size and passion for football that Pace and Fox like in their players. He's probably going to be a 3rd round pick and I'd be a little worried if we wait this long to grab a safety, but he'd be one hell of a prospect to pick up.
While there are a lot of studs in the secondary, one guy who'll be competing against those fielders on Sundays is Wide Receiver Zay Jones. I'd prefer he be on our team rather than working against them. Zay has a football pedigree (a father who played in he NFL) a love of the game. His NFL.com Strengths analysis describes him as "Well respected in the program and scouts rave about his character." Unfortunately, the Cowboys will probably target the kids since his daddy played with them. I'd love to take one away from the Cowboys and get a passionate play maker. God knows we need one on the outside. I'd love for Jones to step into Jeffery's spot and have someone who's committed to winning instead of getting rewarded an undeserved contract.
So, now that I've articulated some of my favorite day 2-3 prospects, who do you all have your sights set on?
