Let the QB carousel turn... JimmyG, McCarron, Cutler, Romo ... Alex Smith?
Probably much ado about nothing, but let's pretend for this thread that Romo goes to the Chiefs in super bowl-less Montana fashion leading to Smith's release. How interested would we be in Smith as the bridge to our future? I imagine he would buy us more time than Cutler currently can.
Id take alex smith over anything the bears have...and still draft one 3rd overall. Bc he is not the answer either. But ge would be a good barometer of the rookies talent and imo would be a good mentor

IMO buying time is all you get with Smith. He is one of the better game manger QBs I've seen.
Over his career he completed 61.7% of his passes with a TD/Int ratio under 2:1 (157:91) and a career QB rating of 85.3
Nothing spectacular. Solid and above average, but that is all.
I agree with ric ... if we draft a QB that we think will develop into a franchise QB, he would be a good starter for 1 or 2 years.
Would you say he's an upgrade over Hoyer? *Honest question for all, not rhetorical.*
yes
I don't think many of these rookies will be coming out being better than Smith (Edit: As none of them are ready and will be better than Smith to start the year. A handful have potential). So if you are bring in as the starter?
For me, Smith would be a temporary starter. I wouldn't put I timeline on how long he starts bc I don't know who he is replacing him. If we grab a guy in the first (I only trust a few QBs overall in this draft to have any sort of chance to start ever), I would hope for the rookie to be ready by midseason. That doesn't mean Smith is sat midseason, but he will be on notice. I would like to give him the year plus an honest shot the next camp. IF we are lucky enough to have a function game manager like Smith and a draft a guy in any round, both must earn the right at the starting job.
I think at least Watson and Kizer have far more potential to be better then Smith, and no real reason to think they don't. Mitch the itch might have also, but one year is impossible to know.
