These Chicago Bears are about to become unrestricted free agents by Bryan Perez
The Bears have a lot of questions to be answered and holes to be filled this offseason. Not only does every team face the task of evaluating the class of veteran free agents and rookie draft prospects that could help their club win games, but they also must prioritize which of their own players they want to re-sign as contracts expire.
For Chicago, the biggest name set to hit unrestricted free agency is wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. After slapping the franchise tag on him for the 2016 season, general manager Ryan Pace will have to decide this winter whether he's worthy of a long-term extension at a pay rate close to the NFL's elite players.
Outside of Jeffery, the Bears aren't facing a crippling list of current players heading to free agency. In fact, there isn't one name outside of Jeffery that screams must-sign.
Here's the complete list of Bears who will be unrestricted free agents, according to OverTheCap.com:
Alshon Jeffery (WR) Brian Hoyer (QB) Ted Larsen (LG) Johnthan Banks (CB) Matt McCants (RT) Connor Barth (K) Deonte Thompson (WR) Chris Prosinski (S) Sam Acho (OLB) Mike Adams (RT) CJ Wilson (DT) Brandon Boykin (CB)
Not a very envious list is it? Some of those guys have had their shot and some more than one. I guess I've reached the point where if we still aren't getting production from them and aren't winning with them let's sweep the porch and reset the table and chairs again. I think if you want to stop losing you stop doing what's causing it and move on from those who are causing it.
Alshon Jeffery - Depends a lot on what his asking price is, we should bring him back. I think Pace drugged Jeffery this year to knock 3.5 million off his FT. Should do the same thing next year. FT and then slip him some dope and test him - do it when he's injured and needs a rest.
Ted Larsen LG - filled in well for the injured Kyle Long and has positional versatility. Holding Larsen and Grasu as backups, we'd be well positioned to weather interior injuries.
Josh Bellamy WR - has a knack for getting open as a WR. Also has a knack for dropping balls. Violent player who runs with aggression when the balls in his hands. Solid STeams player. Versatile. Bellamy's not going to win you games, but he's a good option to have on the back end and as a core STeamer.
Deonte Thompson WR - showed quite a bit as a depth receiver and a speed threat. Provides an option as a kick returner. Not the best option but could def. compete for a spot on the roster especially with the question marks we have at WR. Depends a lot on who else we bring in / who's available as FAs.
Guys I'd bring to camp to consider keeping - not as camp fodder:
CJ Wilson 34DT - Didn't pay much attention to Wilson but we are awfully weak at DT depth. Sutton and Ferguson are very MEH and are injury prone as hell.
Cornelius Washington 34DE - Much the same as Wilson. If we have better options, sure, move on from him but that's a big if. I'd keep Washington over Ferguson and Sutton.
Daniel Brown WR - brought onto the team late this year. Given our limited options at TE we don't have a lot of room. Seems like he's got decent hands and doesn't draw nearly the number of penalties as Paulson. Should bring him to camp to see how he stacks up.
Connor Shaw QB - didn't get much of a shot to show anything. I'd bring him back over Barkley who duped me into believing he could compete. He can't. Shaw might be the same. Give him a shot in camp.
Bryce Callahan CB - full of flashes and then injuries. Not a huge fan of Callahan's but showed enough to bring him to camp to compete.
Sam Acho... Very MEH OLB who survives on work ethic and injuries to better players.
