The part B part of this whole question is.... ok, so Poles wanted continuity. But there was no great shakes results from Flus. So it should have been more of a one or two year prove it on Flus if he had been objective. What possessed him to give him a five year deal? He did nothing to justify that. So this is his fault and to let him out so early screams that he screwed up. So there is going to be resistance to letting him go. Of course if they Carr CW, then he goes anyway and the team and fans are left with wreckage that will take years (maybe decades with no exaggeration) to crawl out of. This is where Warren needs to be the President of the club and give some no nonsense direction.
He got the deal before any of this ever happened. Poles probably told every coaching candidate that year 1 was going to be a tear down...so anyone with 2 working brain cells would ask for an extra year on their deal. Its really only fair considering what the situation was.
Does Warren really have any power here? Then he needs to do something since Poles is compromised by his friendship with Flus.

I don't really think his friendship with Flus is the reason why he still has a job. At the end of the day they all answer to the owner. If Flus is still employed on Black Monday...then I'll rethink my current opinion.

You really don't? I have to admit, that is my take and has been since he kept him.

Others say the George and Teddy don't intervene in these decisions. So which is it?

Personally, I do believe the McCaskey's have final approval/disapproval on major decisions like coach hiring and firing.

Of course they do. They are the owners. The question is whether or not they truly use it. What I mean is do they get into the GMs shorts in terms of his every decision and micromanage every reason he does something or do they just do a per functionary interview, ask the GM if he considered this, that, the other thing, ask who else he looked at, ask why him vs others and approve it if he sees no glaring issues. Just because you are the owner and have final approval doesn't mean you exercise it in a manner that hinders the team. I don't think he wants to be a real hands on owner in the sense of looking over everyones decisions. But that is just my personal take.

I also believe they do. I said in another thread I think it goes all the way to Virginia. She is a control person like Papa. She wants nice guys to be the face of the franchise. It's a family thing after all. So no tough guy HCs, no driven GMs or presidents, and no Honeybears. It's all nicey nicey happy happy. One big nice family.
Except it's a cutthroat sports world. We're not just behind the times in football theory, we're behind the times in the business world too.

Obviously we don't know for sure. But I'm thinking they do use their power to hire and fire high level people like HC and coordinators. Others do the short list and of course the GM has a recommendation but the final "say" is George and Virginia. I think shark86 is correct in that Virginia still has a hand in this too. She seems like a fairly active lady in her old age - still. You'd even see her at games until recently (I have not seen her recently anyway). By the way I like Virginia and believe she's a classy lady. But like Shark, I wonder if they hire "nice men" and then are reluctant to fire the "nice man" until the damage has been done. If Caleb Williams sustains permanent damage under Matt Eberflus' tenure here - how sad is that going to be? Pretty sad.

I don't really see how it could be a take. Whether people want to admit it or not Flus showed some things both in the tear down season and last year that would give you reason to keep him around another year with an improved roster. Further...as Dick Butkus said, this family has always "thrown around nickles like they were manhole covers"...you think they were willing to eat 3 years of salary? I CERTAINLY don't.
