LINK Bears try out return specialist David Wallis. Could this be it for Velus Jones Jr.? Is Velus Jones Jr.'s future with the Bears in trouble?
LINK "The Chicago Bears are working out former New England Patriots wide receiver David Wallis, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson. The news comes one day after rookie receiver Rome Odunze was diagnosed with a Grade 1 MCL sprain suffered in Sunday's comeback win against the Tennessee Titans. Odunze is considered "week to week," according to NFL insiders, and it's unclear how much time he'll miss. But, unrelated to Odunze, Wallis could also be an option in the kick return game after Velus Jones Jr.'s struggles in the season opener, where he fumbled his first kick return. Wallis, an undrafted free agent out of Division III Randolph-Macon College, was signed by the Patriots after a training camp tryout but cut later in the summer."
I saw something that they had 8 players tryout at HH today, none were OL. Which makes sense it's to late to really just bring in some street OL to try and fix this mess. Not sure you could really trade mid season.
Apparently at least 4 of those 8 were primarily return people. VJJ has 100% lost that job.

They're looking for a backup returner to stash on the PS. Velus should never touch a kick again.
He should also be cut but they won't do that. He should be inactive the rest of season IMO unless he's needed as an emergency RB due to injury.
I'm done with Velus. He's pretty useless even as a gadget player cuz every time he's in the huddle (3-4x/game) everyone knows the ball is going to him.

+1 At this point we won't see a quality OL signed. That ship has sailed for 2024. We might possibly find an undrafted kid to sign to the practice squad but that's about it. Yesterday I looked over the remaining veteran OL who have been left unsigned by all 32 NFL teams... Ric it is a steaming pile of crap. There is a reason why no NFL team has touched these dudes. They suck, worse than the players we already have. I figure the ball is in Pole's court in 2025 to (finally) give the OL the attention it needs. He won't do it right on the cheap. It will take real investment of draft and cap resources. And just drafting one dude is not gonna get it done.
For years I've been amazed by how some people think you can just cobble together an OL on the cheap and it's all "good" because, well you know, folks don't value the unit... it's not the sexy draft pick. But then they wonder why the offense under-performs at the skill positions. It ain't rocket-science. If you want those glitzy dudes to excel then build a foundation (offensive line) that allows them to play to their ceilings. We have not done that here in Chicago. 2025 is the year to finally get 'er done. Then watch this offense with Caleb take off and shine for the next 10+ years.
