Barkley deserves an invite to training camp to compete for a backup role. Hopefully we can draft a solid young QB this year. That is my hope.
I keep saying and will continue to say it the Bears don't need to draft a QB then need to see what the have in Shaw and see if Barkley can improve.
1. I keep hearing there isn't any top QBs in this draft.
2. The Bears have a ton of needs, so use the draft pick on someone other the a QB
3. The Bears are not going to be making the post season anytime soon, so just see how the Bears 2 young QBs do next year. If they work out great if not draft a QB in 2018
I think its time the Bears groom a QB. It doesn't have to be a 1st round pick. I say go after Garrett or Allen.
I don't understand why we don't draft a QB. We need to start thinking about the future. Cutler isn't the future. Hoyer isn't the future. Barkley is looking more like he isn't the future. Do we need to see if Shaw isn't the future either?

You could be right, but here's my thought on that. Regarding the quality of QB's in this upcoming draft, it seems like we hear this complaint every single year - yet teams have drafted good QB's in spite of what the "experts" predicted. That could be the case again this year. Maybe there are some solid QB's and one is available for us to draft.
I agree 100% with you, that the Bears have a ton of needs. They are not going to fill all of their needs in this draft and FA no matter what they do. The roster (even when healthy) just has too many mediocre players. I see some young promising talent, mixed in with players who will never amount to much in the NFL. So, if they can't fix the entire roster, then maybe just fix the most important position on any NFL roster - the QB position.
I think Barkley may be a decent backup. All we have on Shaw is that he is yet another training camp wonder like Fales and others of the past Bears camps. He could be NFL material. I think he's probably a kid like Fales.
If we fart around with guys like Barkley and Shaw next year, instead of getting serious about getting a QB to replace Cutler, then it just sets us back another year before we start the "real" process of getting a solid starting QB here. I've gotta believe there is a QB available to us in this draft who will be solid in the NFL.
That's my 2-cents worth. I may be dead wrong, but that's how I feel about it.

I agree though I'd rephrase it and say 'Barkley deserves an invite to training camp to compete.'
It's a nuanced difference, BUT you take the best guy you have. If we bring in a rookie QB and a Garoppolo and we retain Cutler and Hoyer and Shaw, you still have all of them compete and give the job to the best QB. While we all want to imagine Barkley is a backup, he might also be the best guy on the roster to run the scheme of next year's OC.
No one at the QB spot (on this team at least) should be entitled to a backup role or a starter role - or limited to competing for one or the other. They need to earn it. I'd be happy to see us role into TC with 5 QBs or more on the roster and have them all sling it out for the starting role.
+1 That is a better way to word it. He deserves a shot to compete.
Barkley absolutely deserves a chance to compete for the starting job next year. You can't bury a guy because of one bad start all the greats have had horrible games - most of them have had many. Hopefully he can learn from his mistakes and if he doesn't, then send him packing.

2 bad starts.
and again, what has Barkley done before the game is out of hand? Little to nothing that's what. It's only when the def softens or goes into full blown prevent that he's able to score.

I'm amazed at the number of posters that don't see the need to draft a QB this year. Simply pushing it down the line doesn't do anything positive. No matter how good the defense gets, without a decent QB (not elite, but decent and above average) this team would be one and done most seasons in the playoffs. They (Pace) have to fix the QB position. Wishing on a star or hoping that Barkley or Shaw are that guy is ok, but if they go into next season with Barkley or Shaw as the starter, they won't have done the one critical thing the team needs to do. No matter how many holes this team has a WR/DB/whatever, if their QB is there this season, Pace needs to take him. Without a QB this team is doomed to 8-8 if the DEF gets fixed.
Look at the teams around the league that have great def's that don't do anything year in year out b/c the O doesn't do anything. Den last year goes against everything that normally happens. You need the QB to get you to the playoffs and then a def capable of shutting down the other qb's. You rarely if ever get a SB b/c the def is so dominant that even an average qb will get you a SB win; and where is that great Den def this year? Struggling to make the playoffs.

The QB woes here in Chicago have to end someday. Let's try to get a solid QB here. Let's not "settle" for a guy like Shaw, Barkley or Fales. Not for our franchise QB. If we are going to lower the bar that far with our expectations then let's just keep Cutler until he is an old geezer on an aluminum walker. And don't bother firing coaches. It doesn't matter who coaches this mess. We will continue to be a joke of a team.
I want something better for the Bears. Let's, you know, become relevant in the NFL again rather than a butt-ugly joke of a team.
If we want to get serious about winning championships here in Chicago then let's get a seriously gifted QB. Barkley is just another guy like the many backups we've had over the many years here. A wannabee. Let him compete for a roster spot next summer. If we don't have somebody better than him as our starter, then get used to this losing thing guys. It ain't gettin' much better anytime soon here in Chicago. Want to run with the big boys, then get a big boy QB to run the show on offense.

Lets look at this season for the Bears. With the exception of the Titans game (Thanks Josh Bellemy!!) in which games would a better DEF have pushed the game from a loss into a win? How many games difference does an elite DEF make to this team? Yet fix the QB play (all three have sucked so don't even think I'm defending Cutler) and its possible to imagine the team finishing 8-8. Yes I know that maybe Barkley doesn't throw 9 ints in 2 games, but maybe he still does because he's Barkley (like Cutler can't help being Cutler.) Fix the QB position first and upgrade the DEF. Both have to be done this offseason.

I can go along with you on this, my only fear is that the Bears will pick some worthless QB or will reach for a QB not worth the pick or just pick a QB because the one they really wanted is off the board. I have more confidence in the Bears going Defense in the first couple of rounds then I do in the Bears picking any offensive player worth a damn in the first couple of rounds.
