LINK 3 Chicago Bears Who Locked Up a Roster Spot After Pre-Season Week 1
I LOVE what I saw from Wheeler, but I'm not even sure that HE locked up a spot. The RB room is pretty full, but I would like to see us keep him. He looks like he could be a really nice red zone running threat. He us like a raging bull when he runs.

He has an uphill battle to beat out Roschon Johnson I believe. He could possibly make practice squad.
Agree that "locked up" is a little strong but yeah right now I'd rather keep
Baskerville > Amen O Wheeler > Homer (saves $2m on the cap as well)
Velus OTOH shouldn't be a lock but I'm 90% sure he will make it. He was a Poles pick and he's getting some new roles (new KO rule, RB) so I feel like he's gonna get one more season to make his case. Guy just can't track the ball in flight at all. He sucks at it and that makes it hard to use him.
As Harrison Graham (BearsNow channel on YT) said: "he's electric with the ball in his hands but it's really hard to get him the ball in his hands"

+1 It's so sad because the dude has incredible physical gifts. But yeah, I'm not sure anyone can fix his issues. You almost hold your breath anytime he's in on a play - just hoping he doesn't screw up.

I tuned out of the game on Sat when it went into the second half. Did VJJ actually return any KOs? If he's not returning kicks I really don't see value here. He's #4 RB at best (Swift-Herbert-Johnson are 1-2-3) and I'd keep Wheeler at this point over VJJ and have Herbert return kicks (I think the best returners are going to be running backs.)
Everyone is always looking for the next Darren Sproles (the all time gadget back) but Sproles could actually play all over the formation. if VJJ has to have the ball handed to him to get it in to his hands...well thats not helpful. Kind of like when Hester lined up in the backfield and everyone knew he was getting the ball.

Yep, he returned one and he muffed it. Recovered his own fumble. Guy is a walking adventure every time the ball is in flight heading his way.
I would be fine cutting him but he's Poles/Flus pick so my guess is they are gonna give him one more year.

He's making next to nothing (in relative terms) which is the only reason in my mind that he gets a chance if I was GM.** But if he's not generating yards and/or scores in the return game....seriously otherwise whats the point? I hope they (Flus/Waldron/Poles) don't force him into games ie "The Hester Rules."
**Yes, you could go with someone cheaper...but speed kills, and he has it. Can you get the same speed at the same price? I've koind of determined that I'm not going to stress about VJJ until about week 6.

I say cut VIjayjay and keep that Wheeler. The guy was never used a lot in college because he was mainly a what? Kick returner. The guy Is younger, nastier and hungrier so give it to him.
We know what we have in Vijamfingerslux. We don't know and want to see more of Wheeler. Besides, what better name for a RB then wheeling Wheeler?
