The NFL created this by making the passing game king. RB's are a dime a dozen now. But the QB1/WR1 combo is now going to take ~100-mil off your cap, right off the top and teams will need to sign the remaining 51 players on their team with only about 39% of their cap. So roughly 60/40 with 60% of your team's cap going to 2 players and 40% of your cap going to the actual team - outside of those 2 guys. Granted, this is for great players (like Caleb and Rome in a few years). But even guys like Cousins and Goff are blowing up the cap for teams.
Can you see why Poles is wanting a long-term model that focuses heavily on the draft rather than signing free agents at full-retail prices?
And this is 2024 money. I can't imagine what Caleb Williams will command, or Rome Odunze for that matter. The only way forward, that I can see, is to have the best talent evaluation system in place for the draft. Gotta hit a crazy-high percentage in the draft or you're flat screwed. The skill players on offense (not just QB) are going to kill your budget.

Been saying this here for years.
Gradually, the NFL's rules and enforcement standards have accentuated passing offense and de-accentuated the running game (and defense). They will claim it was done out of "player safety" but that's bs. Its about salesmanship of course. Fantasy football, sports betting, and just general TV broadcasting like higher scoring and more highlight reel plays.

That's what SELLS.
After thinking about this, I'm all the more grateful that Poles got Rome Odunze in this draft. That's 4 years of rookie salary and 5 with a 5th year option.
