People on twitter (Lions fans I assume) saying that the contract won't be #2 for long are missing the point. They are now tied to a good and at times very-good QB who has never been considered elite--four at least the next few seasons. He is young, so maintaining this level of play is key. But I feel like we have seen this movie before. Goffs plays at a high level, gets paid, team realizes he isn't the elite multiplier they thought he was, team moves on.
I could be wrong, but seems like the Lions looked at their prospect (Hooker), looked at the next draft class, looked at the possible FA pool and jumped right in on paying Goff. We'll get the true numbers in a day or so and it won't be what is being shouted out now. Maybe the Lions have outs along the way, maybe some of the guarantees are really "guaranteed." (ie they are "NFL guaranteed".)
Granted I don't closely follow the Lions but this team feels ripe for a step-back season. What do I know.
Yes, was going to mention Mahomes also. It can be done if management is smart on CAP and player selection. Not too many GMs are able to do this, so it does not happen often, but it definitely has and can be done.
With the crazy high cost of QBs after that rookie contract expires, you just hope Caleb transitions successfully and quickly so the team can ride that rookie contract, making hay. The last 6 Super Bowls have featured a QB1 on a rookie deal (LINK).
This is why I'm pushing so hard for us to take advantage of Caleb and Rome rookie contract. If Goff is making 53 million a year. Imagine what Williams will get in 5 years. 80-100 million...
+1 Rookie contracts for Caleb and Rome does help the Bears team to have more money for team-wide talent. Just going by this year's cap and top salaries for this season, paying one of the top QB and WR salaries would cost over $80-million dollars. That is 1/3 of your team cap spent on 2 players. Two.

+1 QBs cost a mint. Good-but-not-great ones get elite money. That's just the modern NFL now. What that means (I think anyway) is that if we have to pay elite money to Caleb, then hopefully he "is" elite. I have no problem with that... it's just the cost of doing business now. But the R.O.I. on elite money will hopefully be on elite QB1 play... not a "good but not great" guy.

This is why Bears need to win Super Bowl while Williams and Odunze are on rookie contracts. And it actually needs to be 2025-26 before all the veteran stars are gone.

I found that stat interesting - that the last 6 Super Bowls had a QB1 on a rookie contract. Now that we have Caleb (assuming he truly is an "elite" level QB1... obviously we don't definitively know if he is elite yet), then yes, let's get this thing in gear as quickly as possible. I don't know if we can win a Super Bowl, but that is the obvious focus now. We are in a different phase now that CW is here... and you make a great point, in that we have some solid veterans now too. Clock is ticking...

So is your opinion changed on giving a 2nd rounder to a 17+ sack person changed? Caleb and Rome contract is only cheap for so long.

Yeah, but Brady won a bunch and he was not on a rookie deal. You just have to be generational
Brady also outside of 1 or 2 contracts was never the highest paid QB
Another thought: A situation like this is why you take the QB you think can be elite when you can. The team around Goff is good enough that getting a top 5 draft pick would be difficult with me running out there as starting QB. So the Lions are looking at trading up to draft their next QB. Its great if you can find a Mahomes in the 10-15 range. Its not so good if you pick Davis Mills (the best QB prospect in that class according to Chris Simms.)

When was the last time a rookie QB started with the best WR group in the NFL? Probably never. Even Fields would look “elite” with these receivers. If he doesn’t win a Super Bowl, it will be the defense that fails IMO.
