That makes sense. It is a prove it season for him. He still could end up with a contract there beyond this season, but the Steelers are being (understandably) careful.
LINK Justin Fields' 2025 Contract Option to Be Declined After Bears Trade

In a way I'm glad the Bears traded him. If he turns out to be a bust this coming season, then the Bears won't have the option of drafting #1 next year.
My gut feeling is that Fields will do well and get his contract. But the Steelers are in no rush to pay him before he proves his worth there. Wilson probably won't play the entire year due to injury. And Wilson may not play very well even if he is healthy (guy sure looks in decline). And regardless, Wilson is not a long-term answer there anyway.
This is a test drive for the Steelers to see what Fields has to offer them. Fields will get an opportunity put some good play on film there this year. I hope he does well so that draft pick we get next year is elevated. JMO.

My gut feelings is he turns out to be another Trubisky. A backup QB going from team to team. Us Bear fans overvalue medicore QBs too much. In 3 season his highest passing season was 2.6k yards. That's bad.

That's why it was so important to draft Williams this year. You don't get the #1 overall pick often. To be the team who got that #1 pick from another team is great. Less holes to fill.
The fact even adding DJ Moore. Fields still couldn't average 3k yards passing is enough to let him walk.

Agreed on all counts...
1. No team is going to pull a Carolina move ever again. That was a stroke of genius done by Poles and it isn't going to happen again. 2. You are right Fields didn't perform well, he had his chance, he failed. That is why he is no longer a Bear. 3. In order to Williams without the #1 overall pick, it would have cost the Bears dearly. Poles would have pulled a Pace.

I don't know about that. Teams trade up for QBs almost every draft and they trade away future 1sts pretty often. Heck, Niners traded 3 FRPs for Lance and Bears traded 2 for Fields. It will definitely happen again. Where Carolina went horribly wrong was who they drafted. If they had taken Stroud instead, we would be having a very different discussion right now. Carolina would be very happy with the trade and the Bears would be picking 9 & 18 tomorrow instead of 1 & 9. BIG DIFFERENCE! Turns out, whiffing on a trade up really hurts.

Rumors already out there that the Bears have set the floor for trading up for a QB. Saw that NE wants 3+ firsts for teams to trade up to #3! If that becomes the going rate, thats the new market. The importance of the QB position is still completely under-rated by fans, teams get it and are desperate.
Its a difference of 13 to 15 million between the 5th year option and the franchise tag. It makes sense that the Steelers didn't pick it up...if he proves to be the guy for them they can franchise him and try to work out a long term deal. If not, they're not on the hook for anything, or they can try and work out a cheaper extension with him while they look for their next QB.
