JABF, I get the equivalcy, but I just disagree on it. That's ok.
bsbears I really like your explanation there ^^^^^
Essentially, draft picks are assets that Poles has to exchange for players. This lean draft-talent year presented Chicago with a challenging situation. Poles' plan was to invest his 2nd round draft pick in Montez Sweat. He invested his 4th round draft pick in bringing future Hall of Fame wide receiver, Keenan Allen here for our new young quarterback. He invested his 5th round draft pick in upgrading our OL at the center position. That is (by far) a better ROI than those 3 draft picks would have brought here in this year's draft at those positions. One draft analyst yesterday pointed out that Montez Sweat is better than any edge player in this year's draft. Poles got Sweat for that 2nd round draft pick. I think that was a home run for sure. Keenan Allen is regarded as one of the best route runners in the entire NFL. Poles got him for his 4th round draft pick... and what better gift to give your new franchise QB, Caleb Williams, right? And I guarantee you that 5th round pick was not going to get a better OL center than Ryan Bates - not in this draft, and not with a 5th round pick. And it is a veteran C, so that Caleb will have the advantage of a veteran presence at C snapping him the ball and setting the OL.
It was a brilliant move by Poles. He saw the draft situation in 2024 and maneuvered the Bears like a chess master - ultimately getting us the #1 overall QB in a draft LOADED with quarterback talent this year. He is bringing a guy to Chicago who is arguably the best QB1 in several years of drafts. And with a draft pick he fleeced from the Panthers - that ALSO GAVE US D.J. Moore. In over 60 years of following the Bears I don't know that I have witnessed any GM set us up quite this well for success. Maybe Hall of Fame GM Jim Finks did - the architect of the 1985 Chicago Bears team. He was a great GM too. I put Ryan Poles right up there with Jim Finks at this point. I see so many similarities between what we are now witnessing with the Bears now - with those years leading up to the 1985 Bears. This is a fantastic time to be a Chicago Bears fan.
Go Bears!
