Huh.... how about that. Didn't think they would sign him because of age.
I wanted McKinney, but I guess that’s off the table now.
Byard is same age as Eddie Jackson. He peaked in 2021. From these first two deals, my impression is that Poles simply doesn’t value the center and safety positions high enough to pursue the premier players at those positions.

It looks to me like Poles is trying to be careful with his resources and get the most bang for the buck. It is a fine line between getting the needed overall team talent without overspending. You know me... I'd like 5 first round draft pick guys - every one an All-Pro on that offensive line (yes, I'm joking here). But I do understand the overall team is being rebuilt, a year at a time here. This is year 2 of the rebuild (this draft and FA). Maybe, for the overall good of the team being built, it may be best to go with a Byard and/or a Bates - for now. Or, perhaps he is just setting the draft up so that he can spend those remaining picks on the best players available and not HAVE to reach for a guy due to need. This is why I'm waiting to see the final roster before I react to individual moves.

I agree. But McKinney was probably too expensive.
Poles has more cap space than nearly all GMs. Therefore, if he really wants Cushenberry or McKinney, he can outbid nearly anybody. The 2024 free agency auctions will tell us very clearly what he wants — and doesn’t want.

You are aware, of course, that those two would take like 25mil or more of our space? And we need to sign a lot of guys. For instance starting DE and DT.
