I dont think we can this year. Maybe decent reserve
He’s got #9. He could address the problem right there if he wanted instead of drafting defensive linemen.
I'm torn about this because I really don't want to see them go with a top OT this year. And #9 seems too rich for a C or a G (whom we really need more than an OT). And we do need a legit talented WR to pair with DJM. If the Bears do go with a DL guy at #9 that means the offense will be more difficult to fix for the new kid at QB. The fans are gonna be mighty sick if Jenkins takes his usual IR vacation, Whitehair is gone (not that he was any good anyway) & Nate Davis blows chunks again... and we watch yet another year of a young QB running for his life. Caleb, like Fields, can run when the OL fails. But do we really want to watch another year of that? It would be a lost year regarding Caleb's development too. Nobody wins.

All true. And I’m sick of this orthodoxy that “you can’t draft a center at #9”. If Poles can’t get JPJ with a trade down, he should just do it! This would help the team immensely. It is by far a greater positional need than WR or DL. Get WR in second round or FA, if Odunze is gone by #9. He’s already invested a lot into the DL with Sweat, Jones, Dexter, etc. The rest can come next year. As you say, he should prioritize offense in 2024 to help Williams to max his rookie year.

I keep thinking that Poles does understand the importance of fixing the remaining problems with the offensive line. Why draft another QB and let him fail? Fields was on Pace, and was not a Ryan Poles QB draftee. But not what Poles is drafting - what should be the best QB in an entire draft class - then I have to believe Poles will set the kid up to succeed. I think he will. I just don't know how he will go about it. He could sign Kevin Dotson in FA (from the Rams). He would be an absolute stud upgrade over Nate Davis. He's only 27 years old too. Another FA option would be to steal Jon Runyan from the Packers. He too is only 27 years old and is really solid. I think he would fit our offense blocking scheme well too.
So there ARE various ways Poles can get this done with a combination of draft and FA. I just am curious how he will attack this. He will get it done.

He will get something done, but will it just be more Patrick, Davis, Kramer, Carter (the wrong one), etc., etc., etc.? He did get Wright and Brax, but the middle of the OL has remained a mess, which is no small part of Fields’ problems. That has to end here and now.

I keep coming back to thinking this guy played the OL position. Surely he can get this done now. If the Chicago Bears want the new rookie kid to succeed (and they obviously do... jobs hang in the balance here now) then provide a pocket to work out of. That running around stuff of Caleb and Fields is great for highlight reels, but it doesn't translate to wins. That is not sustainable football if that is ALL you've got. And the WR room has to be more than 1 dude, DJ Moore. But again, a moron could figure that one out. How the Bears get it done, I don't know. But they need to put the D in the back seat this year and fix the offense for the new kid. No more of this rationalizing that a rookie QB "should" be able to do a Stroud. LOL, don't go down that road. Set the table for the kid to be our first great franchise QB since the 1939 draft of Sid Luckman... that was eighty five years ago. Let's get this QB curse put in the grave this year.

He’s got the #9 pick and $80 million cap. You and I could do it ourselves if we agreed to spend both these on WR and C/G. Poles obviously CAN do it, but will he agree with you about not spending more top draft/FA resource on defense in 2024? As Ric always says, that’s the Bears way of doing things. It can change, of course, but I’m not as convinced as you. We will get our first indication when we see what he does in FA.

I'm glad I'm not the GM. We'd be a mess :-)
I'm glad you're not too!
(Then you wouldn't be here talking Bears with us!)

At least it would be my own mess. Something to be said for that.
That is almost impossible. Bigger chance JPJ gets to rd 3.
I think Maye will go to NE. But crazier things have happened on draft night. Look how far Rodgers dropped. JPJ to round 3 is impossible.
Anyway, I think the #9 pick could possibly be traded down to 17-22 for a second round pick. I hope Poles is thinking about that, if he’s down to #4 on his WR list. JPJ would be much more valuable to the offense, and he gets a WR anyway from this trade or Fields trade for a second rounder.
