Not done with the defense podcast yet, but Lucas did let slip that he wonders how well Johnson will tackle once he gets paid, as that was a question mark in the past. Its one of the things Poles has to take into account when crafting a deal for him. He essentially performed like this for one season...why did it only come in his contract year and will it be there next year once he gets paid?
I caught that too, Butkus. I'm more concerned that JJ will stop attacking the ball well after getting paid. He only had 1 career INT IIRC before this season. But I do think these are just the risks you have to take in this situation. You gotta pay him IMO. Maybe FT him to get that done but ultimately get a deal signed.
I also thought it was interesting to hear Lucas say the Bears could easily have the best starting CB trio in the NFL (I agree) and that Terrell Smith could be a good safety. I hadn't thought of that last one but it makes sense based on his evaluation of his strengths and weaknesses.
I just finished the podcast this morning. Yeah, Smith at safety is a pretty interesting thought and would save a lot of money if they made the move for that this off season.

Lucas pointed out that Smith got exposed playing man as a corner late in the year. Since I can't see EJax being back, they should give him reps at S in OTAs and TC and see if it clicks.
Most players offered a second contract don't live up to the contract. Find the studies, they are out there. Injuries mount, schemes change, the players they line up next to are different....there are many reasons why, included is "getting paid has a effect." All of that is true.
BUT
If you don't pay market value (and yes I know we disagree on the meaning of market value in the NFL on this board), some other team will. If Poles goes to JJ and says, we aren't going to offer $20mil+ because we think after you sign that we'll get $15mil returned in effort JJ isn't signing here. Because some team out will offer $20mil+. Its easy to say just draft another CB and harder to do in real life. CB is a premium position with the emphasis placed on the passing game. Got to resign him unless he wants crazy money.
With the benefit of hindsight we fans will know in a few years if it was a good signing. We loved the Jackson signing (yes I realize that you, specific poster that you are, will claim that you have reservations about it and you maybe even mentioned it in an offhand backwards way) at the time, locking up a good young safety. Same will happen to any contract JJ signs.
