The Chicago Bears must cut their 90-man roster down to 75 by Tuesday afternoon, and with their third preseason game in the books, they’re getting a head start on it.
The team announced the first 10 players they are releasing Sunday afternoon, and we may know the remaining five by the end of the weekend.
Ryan Pace thinned out his team’s deep wide receiver corps, one that had 13 players originally on the roster, including Marquess Wilson, who is on the physically unable to perform list.
Gone are Kieran Duncan, Derek Keaton and Darrin Peterson, none of whom played Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Bears also trimmed a little off their struggling offensive line, moving on from John Kling, who didn’t play in the third preseason game, and Martin Wallace, who had played well in his opportunities in live action.
Wallace’s release goes as a reminder that what we see in preseason games is only part of the evaluation process. He may have played well under the lights, but if he wasn’t performing consistently in practice week-to-week, then it’s an easier decision to waive him.
Also out in the first cuts are fullback Darrel Young, running back Senorise Perry, tight end Gannon Sinclair, defensive lineman Keith Browner and cornerback Joel Ross. All five had provided decent contributions off the bench throughout the preseason, but each failed to move up in their respective competitions, and it’s not surprising to see them go.
The Bears still have five roster spots to clear out, and they have yet to put injured center Hroniss Grasu or quarterback Connor Shaw on the reserve/injured list, so those two could clear up a few spots, leaving only three players to be cut on top of the 10 who are already gone.
It shouldn’t be long before we hear the team’s next moves and see who remains with one preseason game to go before the Bears have to cut down to 53.
