Braxton Jones is an excellent example of how offensive linemen can improve a lot in those first 3 seasons. His first season he showed that he had good raw physical talent, but clearly he had a ways to go to be what we needed at the starting LT position. It just takes time for these guys to develop on OL. Some never improve and we have seen that. But even the good ones need time.
I remember Gabriel did a film study on him last year and said he needed to hit the weight room to add lower body strength against bull rushers. He did that and has shown improvement, but he’s still getting pushed back more than I’d like. I want to see him set the anchor 5-10 feet from Fields and HOLD them there. Haven’t seen that enough yet. Maybe next year.
I agree it seems like he really did the work to add weight training strength. Now Jones still talks about how he is working on his technique used in these blocks... he feels he needs to get better, still. I may be wrong, but to me it sounds like he will really improve his "functional" strength as his technique is polished and improved. Also, with experience maybe his functional quickness will improve too. I'm thinking of how he may be an instant quicker in reacting (correctly) to the move that the opposing player uses on him on a given play. LOL, now I'm spitballing here because I admit I don't know.
And what really makes me feel good is that these remaining offensive line moves are SO doable in 2024. The Bears have the resources to do every single one of these things and have a great OL in 2024.
Davis is kind of an unknown. He’s had a tough year.
My gut feeling is that Davis is a placeholder until the Bears can bring in a young guy to upgrade there. It seems like he's an average guard, but has had some rough games. He could be playing hurt. Especially at this time of the year a lot of linemen are. In fact Gabriel said in a recent podcast that Braxton Jones looks like he is playing hurt. Now, how he determined that I have no idea. But that's something that we as fans (at least me anyway) don't know about. Brax seems like he has the heart of a warrior. Fields is one of those guys too. Those kind of guys can be dinged up and they play anyway. Davis could be hurt too, but who knows, right?
