This is the thread to post your thoughts about what will/should happen with the Bears defensive secondary in 2024.
Stevenson still makes me nervous. Yes, I know he is a rookie, learning curve, etc., etc. Terell Smith is also a rookie, and IMHO, Terell has been outplaying Stevenson so far this year. That opinion is based on watching them on the field all year, but I will just mention their PFF grades to back up my assessment. Stevenson is graded about 55 (which is pretty damn bad), and Smith is graded 73 (which is pretty damn good, especially for a rookie DB).
MP, butkus, Ric. etc., spare my the comments about how useless PFF grades are. They are not perfect, but you guys don’t grade every player on every snap. They do.
What to do about this? First, I want to see a serious competition between them in training camp for the starting position. Second, I want to give Stevenson a chance to play safety in training camp. Dave Wannstedt says Stevenson could convert to safety. Not easy, but it’s an option to try.
Assuming that Jackson is gone, the alternative is to draft a safety in round 3-5, but that probably not going to fill the hole in 2024. What about Hicks? Maybe he can do the job.
Anyhow, what are you thinking about the secondary, going into 2024?
Keep Jackson one more year and draft his replacement. Rest looks fine and is ascending. Resigning, or tagging, JJ is a must.
I’ll be surprised if that happens. Jackson cap hit is $18 million next year. Eddie allowed 62% completion rate. Terell Smith has allowed 61%, and he doesn’t cost $18 million! League average is 64%. Stevenson is 67% — he’s got a lot of “ascending” to do. I don’t want to get to 2025 with a below NFL average corner opposite JJ, whichis why I’m hoping Smith takes over the job.
One more thing: Bears rank #1 in rushing yards allowed per game and #25 in passing yards allowed per game. Blame Flus for some of that, but not all.

Agree, however I understand the draft is weak at Jackson’s position. If they can’t get someone in free agency nor a solid player in the draft, they can still afford to keep him one more season.
