"... a 280-pound backup center from a non-scholarship FCS school..."
LOL, I sure HOPE the Bears don't sign him :-)
But the Bears sure don't seem to value the position at all. Toss a jag in there at C and then wonder why he sucks, right? Bears roll that way at C and it has hurt us over the years. I just don't understand that mentality at all. If it truly is a problem (it is) then why not invest serious draft resources into the position and get a stud who can be THE foundational piece of that IOL? The ROI is huge for that investment. I watch 36 year old Jason Kelce still performing at an incredible level - many All-Pro seasons later. I'm hoping the Bears at least grab a guy with that high-3rd round draft pick next year. If they can recoup a 2nd round pick then that would be even better because they could probably get the #1 center in this 2024 draft class. But even that high-3rd round pick should at least get a top-3 C in this draft. Some here have suggested ALSO signing a FA center and that would be fine too. As long as we have the youngster in-house in 2024... someone who may be great... I get it that nobody is a sure thing in the NFL, but at least TRY to get a guy with elite ceiling potential.

Pace tried once, James Daniel was the highest ranked C the year he was drafted. Previously, Whitehair was drafted as a G who moved to C and made the All-rookie team (IIRC).
Not disagreeing with you, just putting something out there I remember. Whitehair aged quickly, C can often play into their mid-30s. Daniel took too long to develop and never went back to C. (Remember when the Bears were playing Whitehair at C and Daniel at G--neither one at their college positions? Fun times.)
All those C people wanted in the last draft, how are they doing? No one ever says anything about them...is there a reason why? I honestly don't know who the good C were in the draft. I foolishly thought Patrick could do it with Whitehair as the backup.

I agree with you. Whitehair was Pro Bowl at C but the team jacked him around - bouncing him between 3 IOL positions and his game was never quite the same again. Daniel was a bust... but you don't give up after a bust happens. Same at QB1. If you bust on one, well, take another swing at it. Don't give up.
EDIT: I just looked up James Daniels and he actually is doing well for the Steelers. So, I was wrong about him being a bust. He is 26 years old and playing solid football... at least that's what it looks like grade-wise.

I'd like a FA C. Looks like two better names (One of which is Kelce, he isn't coming to Chicago.) and a bunch being paid Patrick money which means....they'll be Patrick-ish.

This is something that bugged me about Pace. He would often let guys he drafted go who then went on to good careers while we struggled to replace them. Floyd, Amos, and Daniels were all guys I think we should have kept.

As fans (and before everyone jumps in and claims they weren't saying this, yeah yeah yeah, this was what was generally believed) Floyd didn't live up to his draft pick, Amos wanted too much money and Daniel was a bust. You can check the consensus on this board using the search feature.
Letting them all go made "sense" at the time. Shows how much we as fans know....3 solid starters we are still looking to replace today.
(Although Daniel is now a guard so....I'd rather have Jenkins/Davis. While he was here Daniel never added the power to play C. He might be able to now.)
