Did you see that article in The Athletic by Jahns today? It is 7 things that will determine Fields fate. He quotes Flus, “ Taking care of the ball is the quarterback’s #1 job.” If Fields causes turnovers in these 7 games, he’s gone. If Drake Maye is as good as I’m hearing, Fields may be gone anyway.
What Fields has to do the last 7 games to hold onto the job is hard to quantify (we will know it when we see it) but I will take a shot at it here:
200 yards/game passing minimum (call it 250 min combined pass/rush yards)
65%+ completion rate
3:1 TD:Turnover ratio (yes that TDs running + passing and Turnovers INTs+Fumbles)
STAY HEALTHY ALL 7 GAMES
It would sure help if Fields could win a couple games in the 4th quarter on must-have-it drives. That's something he hasn't done nearly enough in his career
Caleb and Maye both have a lot of raw talent. I think Caleb Williams had the best thing happen to him this season when USC suffered some hard losses. It was humbling to the point he was crying after one of the losses. I mean, you WANT a confident QB. But not an arrogant ass QB. There is a difference. I watched him in his most recent loss, the one where he was outplayed by Oregon QB, Bo Nix. Nix looked crazy-talented in that game. But Caleb looked very solid to me. He made some great decisions under heavy pressure in that game. I did like that. Nix looks like a guy who has an obscene level of talent surrounding him in Oregon. I just wonder to myself what he would look like on a team like the Bears that doesn't match up against opposing defenses that well. Maybe he would. But I think I'm leaning to Caleb and Maye both being on a tier by themselves. Then you have the rest, like J.J. McCarthy, Nix & 2 or 3 others in that next tier.
